Decoding attainment levels - KS2

I'm really sorry if this is a well-trodden path. I am new to the site and have searched around, but cannot find the answer I am seeking.

In short, what do the numbers on my children's reports mean? Is there a table somewhere that decodes them: i.e. says what "3-B" or whatever actually means? There is nothing in the reports that says what these numbers indicate. I am baffled.

They (twins) are just finishing yr3.

DD marks:
QCA Reading Test 4c
QCA writing test: 3b
QCA Maths test: 3c
Teacher assessment: 3b

DS marks:
QCA Reading test 4c
QCA writing test: 3b
QCA Maths test: 2a
(no teacher assessment on this one).

What on earth does it all mean?

Ok, levels go up numerically, but within the levels there are grades. The likely scale in primary schools is this: 1c, 1b, 1a, 2c, 2b, 2a, 3c, 3b, 3a, 4c, 4b, 4a, 5c, 5b, 5a (although occasionally a few children go on to be assessed as a level 6).

It's starnge that they have only reported the QCA optional test level, since this is only a snapshot - the teacher assessment, which starts in Reception and continues right the way through school, is a much truer indicator of their day to day work.

2b is the expected level for end of Y2, and 4b is the expected level for end of Y6. To track pupils accurately in between, schools expect slightly differing levels from an 'average' child in the other year groups, and that usually goes something like this:

End of Y1 - 1a
End of Y2 - 2b
End of Y3 - 2a/3c
End of Y4 - 3b
End of Y5 - 3c/4c
End of Y6 - 4b

So both your twins, if they are working at a 2a/3c or higher, are both doing well.

Hth.
