My dd10 is currently having a tantrum because I've said no to snapchat. She has a phone without a SIM.

Anyone's 10 yr old have snapchat?

Nope and it's one of the ones I've told him he can't have, along with Facebook and Instagram!

Nope, isn’t there an age restriction with the app?

Nope. No chance. No fb, Instagram, Twitter either. She has imessage and house party for group calls and I check those regularly.

Several children in my 10 yr old DSs class have snapchat and instagram; I am a mean mummy who won't let him have them 🙄
I also have teenagers. The things I've seen on their snapchat Looks for eye bleach

Don’t go there not with a 10 year old. Snapchat is awful many secondary schoolers get it in year 7 or 8. Snapchat is easily abused as Snaps disappear lots of bullying and manipulation and no record as they disappear so you have no idea what’s been said to them unless they take screen shots (which angers the bullies and makes things worse. I would wait until as long as possible before exposing a child to Snapchat.

www.net-aware.org.uk

This states Snapchat minimum age of 13 as recommended by Snapchat. Show that to your daughter....

Don't worry. I've told her no way and I'm sticking with it.

There are 2 girls in her class who have got it in the last few days hence her enthusiasm!

I also have a dd14 who has it and I do agree, eye bleach is definitely needed for that Grin

She has an old phone with no sim and uses it for musically and texting me loads!!

Her twin otoh is adamant she doesn't want a phone until she's 17 as she doesn't want to get addicted to it ! Ha ha! Long may that last.....

They are attracted by the filters dog ears tigers making look like you have flawless skin etc. But their is a lot of damaging bullying and manipulation going on also.
Some parents manipulate the child’s DOB so they can get this before age 13 but stick to your guns.

No. Stick to your guns. Legally she can’t have it until 13. The law is there for a reason to protect children who aren mature enough to handle any difficult situations that might arise.

DD is nearly 11 and won't get it until we really can't avoid it further. Some of her classmates have it, similar to WhatsApp and Instragramm but so far we stick to text, facetime with approved friends and calls.

She will move to secondary in September and we reluctantly agree that you virtually can't avoid WhatsApp then without having them left out of lots of social interaction.

Thanks everyone. She calmed down eventually and gave me 50p this morning to apologise for her epic meltdown!!! Smile

It hasn't been mentioned since.

My 9 year old will use my snap chat but does not send anything to anyone and it's on my phone..... Social networks and similar have a minimum age for a reason.
