They don't know the meaning of the words "clean up"

I swear our 8 and 11 year old don't know the meaning of the hisclean up" it doesn't matter what it is, in the yard, in their rooms, or anyone where they have been, they leave their stuff and no matter what I do it stays until I remove it.

Maybe that's why they do it-they know you will clean up after them. It's a trap many of us fall into.

My 12 year old can't tidy up because she truly can't see what is wrong with her (or any other) room. I have to tell her in detail, then she will do it. You have to teach them what "clean up" means but you definitely shouldn't be doing it for them. Rather do it with them.

DDs (aged 8 and 11 too) tidy up because if they don't then there are sanctions. For instance; missing out on a play date, a sweet treat, pocket money or time on the computer/ TV.

DS (14) tidies up because he is older and has learnt that a tidy room is easier to live in.
