Cheap chest freezer?

I’m new to prepping and, due to this board, we were able to get through the first wave of Covid as a shielding family with all the stuff I had prepped using advice on here.

I’ve now started to prep for the second wave and brexit. I have a fully stocked freezer but feel that I could do with a bit more space. We have a garage I could put a chest freezer in but not such spare cash.

Could anyone recommend anywhere I can get a medium sized chest freezer for a decent price please?

Don't know how much you wanted to spend but we bought our second chest freezer fro here, thinking of buying a third. Grin

Ha ha I'm just doing the exact same thing! I was looking at one from Argos, Bush £129.99. It's only a small one as I'm limited on space.

Yeah I thought it was a good price too. It's not big but perfect for endless chicken nuggets and chips and it's A+ rated too 😁

I also bought the Bush freezer £129.99 from Argos. Holds lots for the size and really quiet. Instructions say it is not suitable for garage or shed.

@30daysoflight that's great to hear! Do you think it's a temperature thing not being suitable for garage/shed? I was going to put it in my under stairs cupboard. I'm sure that'll be ok right?

Try asking on local fb pages. I’ve just given one away to someone this week.

Are these freezers actually in stock now? I wanted to buy either a freezer or a fridge freezer two weeks ago and couldn't find them in stock anywhere (except for the very, very expensive fridge freezers.) They weren't being manufactured during lockdown, apparently.

Hi @passthemustard

Yes it has to be indoors so under stairs is perfect. Due to small kitchen mine is in my large lounge diner. I bought the black version so it doesn't look out of place. It's so handy.
Not sure if in stock for anyone looking, I bought mine about 8 weeks ago and delivery was 21 days later.

I think my MIL is giving me hers and I wondered if anyone has any tips of how best to use it please?

The main issue I find with my chest freezer is knowing what's at the bottom without digging. I try to keep things in the same place all the time, which helps a bit. So opened bags of vegetables etc, are in the basket on the top, things that I use often are at the side on the ledge above the motor, under the basket are unopened bags of the vegetable etc. waiting to be moved into the basket and things I don't use very often. I've tried putting everything in containers but that didn't work, might be ok in a full size freezer. I also have a freezer under my fridge that has a drawer for meat and fish, a drawer for vegetarian stuff and a drawer for bread. The chest freezer is mainly fruit, vegetables and food in bulky bags.

Look at Facebook marketplace.
I got a small one for £20 a couple of weeks ago. Old, bit bashed, but works perfectly. And in the garage it doesn't matter what it looks like.
It probably isn't outbuilding rated, but I wasn't sure if a garage freezer would work for me as my garage is detached from the house so didn't want to spend a lot.
I'll probably replace with a tall upright frostfree freezer suitable for outbuildings if I decide it works.

Mine is also second hand, cost me £40 and it's absolutely fine for where I keep it, I didn't know if I'd find it useful so didn't want to buy new.
