Seven day prep

On the back of the Brexit prepping threads, I'm looking for ideas/meal plans that would cope with a weeks' disruption to food and utilities without needing to venture out.

So far, my cupboards aren't bad - I always have a supply of tins/pasta/pulses/flour & yeast etc in. Freezer very well stocked as I do lots of batch cooking, but I don't want to rely on that in case of power outages.

However, I have no water, and no real "plan".

I have access to a charcoal BBQ, a pizza oven (come the apocalypse I can still make a hawaiian!), and an indoor woodburner.

My ideas so far:

  • could make daily flatbreads or bread in pizza oven.
  • cook meat/fish from freezer first as a priority - in stews/BBQ or pizza oven, using up fresh fruit and veg first.
  • use up other perishables next - cheese/eggs/butter/potatoes.
  • Get UHT milk in (How much to get for a family of four including DD4 and DS1?) Is powdered milk any good/different to UHT?
  • Get water in (How much pp per day?)
  • next use up tins & packets.
  • stock up on wood this summer.
  • get more candles/matches in.
  • move sleeping arrangements to living room (woodburner + warmth from each other) if weather cold.
  • pray that things have resolved by then!

Water should be an easy ish one - I thought until we had no rain for weeks here.
Leaving that to one side for a mo, 2litre bottles of water are dirt cheap in supermarkets. Get the odd four pack with your shopping. Add to it as you see fit. Obviously it's bulky - I store in the garage. Rotate its use and keep it out of the sun.
Look at collecting rain water but also have a set up to boil any collected water for at least 10 mins.
Also have an old Tshirt to filter out big stuff like leaves.
Look at using grey water strategies- can you boil eg veg and then use the water to wash pots in. I've actually had to do this but it was about 25 years ago in another country.

Just on the “sleeping in the room with a fire” scenario Make sure you have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors!

Absolutely. I think I might be asking for volunteers to keep watch if that's an option.
