25 Weeks and waters have gone completely!!!

Please I need some support from anyone in a similar situation. I am 25 weeks exactly. Yesterday my water started going at 6:20pm, I was admitted to hospital at 7pm. Had steroids and antibiotics at 9pm. by 1:15am this morning they scanned me and seen no waters around the baby.

Has anyone had success stories in this situation or similar?

What should I expect?

Any questions I need to ask neonatal team?

P.s. This was a low risk pregnancy before this.

I am very teary and need to get a grip to be the best I can for my baby at this time (So any advice welcome).

I have my real life support however my support has not experienced this situation.

One of my friends had this happen to her when baby was 24-25 weeks. They couldn't leave him in for long with no waters so they gave him steroids and she gave birth to him.

He was tiny. He fit in the palm of her hand.

He was in that hospital (she was on a business trip) for a month or so while they struggled with maturing his lungs without compromising his liver. His Mum always said he was doing fine, but her mum was more forthcoming and it was touch and go those early days. Eventually he was well enough to be moved by ambulance to a more specialist hospital in her hometown.

She lived in an attached flat while he stayed in hospital for several more months. His main problems were breathing and his father who smoked wasn't able to hold him for an hour after smoking. (He was a twat anyway and is no long gone.)

After c.six months he was allowed home on oxygen. He was the size of a much younger baby but with a more mature face.

He was top percentiles for height for his gestation and after a few years looked about right for his age.

Breathing continued to be the main issue. He was on oxygen for at least a couple of years, but not all the time. He was rushed to hospital a couple of times with breathing difficulties.

At about five he had an operation to improve his breathing which massively improved his quality of life as he is able to be active like his peers now.

At six you would not know his was so premature.

My friend dealt with all of this as a single mum. I think having her mum and stepdad around helped - extra people to ask questions/listen to answers. She was also resolutely upbeat about every good bit of news. She treated him like a normal baby as much as she could eg oxygen tank in the pushchair to enable trips out. The live in accommodation at Alderhey also made the extended time in hospital more bearable.

Have they said how long they'd let you go with no waters? I was told 2 weeks, there was a drug they can give to hold off contractions but it gave me bad side effects so they had to take me off it. I think infection is the main risk so they'll check you very closely for that.

My friend had a baby at 26 weeks. She went into labour and gave birth in the car at the side of the road. Her daughter was very small and the first months were tough going but she’s 11 now and apart from dyslexia which may or may not be related to her prematurity she’s absolutely fine and the tallest in her class.

What a scary time for you.

Every pregnancy is different but I have a success story. My sil’s waters broke a few days before 20 weeks. She was told she’d go on to have a late miscarriage but she didn’t. She would have been offered a termination Ibelieve, but wasn’t in England. She was on bed rest but told they wouldn’t attempt to save the baby until 24 weeks due to such low odds. She made it to 24 weeks and got transferred to a hospital with better neonatal care. The waters regenerate so she kept drinking/keeping hydrated. They did keep leaking out though. At about 30 weeks she got an infection and was given a section to get him out. Touch and go for a few days (collapsed lung, infections). He was eventually let home with oxygen as his lungs were very underdeveloped (younger than a 30 week gestation). There were a few stays in hospital in the first year as every cold/cough had complications but fast forward and he’s now a happy, boisterous 3 year old! To look at him you’d never guess what he went through. I assume his lungs will never be ‘normal’ but I don’t really want to ask. He’s our miricle boy!

I'm have a girl,

They said they will not intervene until infection etc (So no deadline).
On the other hand if I go into natural labour (With in the next 3 days) I'm unsure how it goes from there. I intend to ask.

Currently I am in hospital they said my bloods test results are borderline.

I have my mum and partner shift visiting and have been amazing.

Hand hold, loads of babies pull through from early arrivals if it comes to that. Also baby regenerates amniotic fluid so keep sipping your fluids (or whatever your doctor tells you to do - I'm not an expert ) and good luck!

Do you have a notepad and pen? Notes on your phone? Write as much down so you can keep track and look back later.

That’s good news it’s a girl in terms of development as my sil was told that up to about 27 weeks a girls lung development is a bit ahead of boys lung development. Not sure how true that is but that is what she was told.

Another success story here - my friend’s water broke with her twins at 26 weeks, she managed to keep them inside until 30 weeks when she had an emergency c-section. The girls had a really rough start, infections and lots of struggles, but they’re now 8 years old and you honestly can’t tell that they had such a tough start in life. Wonderful happy, healthy girls!

An update on today's progress, the Dr just done the rounds and said if bloods come back clear today, I have my second dose steroids at 11pm and keep taking antibiotics, I maybe able to leave tomorrow but on complete bed rest and be seen as an out-patient every 1-2 weeks to do checks. So I got everything cross. Next set of Drs will explain in more depth on the antenatal ward, I'm being transferred to.

I just remembered my Uni friend had her waters go early with DC2 and DC3. DC2 was close to full term so they kept her in another week or so with my friend popping into hospital every couple of days for checks.

DC3 was more like 30-32 weeks and he stayed in about 3 more weeks I think. Again with friend mainly at home on bed rest (that she did not stick to). He is still small for his age at 14 months but no health problems at all.

Also my other friend was premie herself, on the verge of viability 35 years ago. She has poor eyesight as a result but that is it and had her own baby at full term two years ago.

Hi everyone,
Just a brief update: unfortunately the consultant has come in today and said I can't go home. As baby has no waters (confirmed by growth scan yesterday) and can go into labour at any point and she said she can get baby up to NICU in 8 mins, however if I go home I will not get that immediate care baby will need being 25w + 2 days. So she will review me mid week.

I know I shouldn't but I think I wanted to hear "Go home, baby most probably won't come now and stay in until at least 30weeks." so I guess the reality just hit me (Again) so I cried for 5 mins then got myself together as consultant said "This is the best place for the baby right now. Being so young gestational wise."

So as soon as I get another update I will let you all know. And hopefully it will be a positive one.

I know it's easy to say and hard to do but try and stay calm and positive. A girl I know had her baby girl at 23 and 6. She was very very tiny but otherwise we'll and she was in special care for a good few months but she's almost 2 now and doing very well. She has no problems and she's still quite petite but developmentally she's great.

My friend had an emergency C section at 24 weeks and three years later everything is fine

He was in intensive care for a while and allowed Home after a few months with oxygen

Stressful times but prem baby care has come on so much
