Contraception

So I've had the nexplanon implant for almost 3 years, I've been a hormonal mess, very emotional, paranoid, anxiety and weight gain to name just a few side affects.
I've booked to have it taken out the end of this month, we would like to TTC next summer.
Would I be silly to not have another form of contraception in use?
I have a husband that works away 90% of the time and we have very little sex.
I'd like to give my body a break, it's been pumped with hormones since I was 15 and feel using condoms for the 1 or 2 times a month we actually have sex is fine. But is this irresponsible ? (I'd be perfectly fine with Falling pregnant a little earlier if that did happen anyway)
Has anyone had the implant removed ? How long does it take for your body to return to normal? I've had no period for 3 years now.
Also no idea if this is the correct place to post, couldn't find a contraception board to post on.
Thanks in advance.

I have just seen this so I might be nearly a year too late! But I had the same implant and had it removed Jan 2016, I conceived in May 2016 and had my little girl February this year, we weren't actively trying and will an at the time 2 year old who would often share the bed we didn't really have sex regularly either, I was told as soon as the implant is out you are able to conceive straight away.
Hope TTC is going / has gone well x
