Hips aching in night already, anything I can try?

I suffer a bit with stiff achy hips normally, so already have a long pillow to pop between my knees, but the last few weeks (I'm only 25 weeks) I've been waking about every hour to roll over, as my hip hurts so much.

It doesn't help I'm not in my own room, as we're redecorating, but it is the normal mattress. I have tried putting another duvet on top of the mattress (as it is quite a firm mattress) and this seemed to help a little, but back to how it was now.

Do I just have to put up with this for the next 15 weeks (or 17 if I'm really lucky ) or does anyone have any ideas I could try?

Try a memory foam topper. And ask for a referral to physio.

I bought this as I was having so much pain with my hips.

It has worked really well & I am sleeping much better.

the same is happening to me at night. That huge pillow looks amazing prozac.

Would they really refer to physio for hip pain if its only when sleeping/ lying on one side? That sounds very tempting if it might help too.

Watching this thread with interest - am 24 weeks and suffering the same problem! I am watching that giant pillow on ebay now, cheers Prozac - will buy one on payday

I've found that if I sleep slightly on my front, with one leg bent at the knee on a pillow and another one sort of wedged against my bump, the pain isn't so bad.

Glad in not the only one, thought it was too early to be complaining i was uncomfortable at night! I'll give a few of those suggestions a try, and might try making a duvet the shape of that big pillow!

Try laying on many layers of duvet (probably easier in winter as both my pregnancies have been) - I think I was evenutally on 4 layers with a pillow between my knees and under bump.

omg me too - it gets so bad i can't walk and have to crawl to the toilet, am also 25wks, on third pg and this happenned with the other 2 too. I also get bad spd which is all related I think. As others have said, the only relief I have ever managed to get was to sleep on a duvet or sleeping pad - the fluffier and more padded the better - this does help a bit.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I slept on two doubled over duvets last night and was definitely an improvement. Also trying to sleep slightly tilted on to front seemed to help a bit, with assistance from my big pillow.

If it's Spd related go to an osteopath. I suffered thruout my pregnancy and 3 months afterwards until I went to osteo. Was reffered to physio during pregnancy who was rubbish and didnt help at all. Though I did ind sleeping on a electric heat pad thingy helpful but prob not so good in the warm weather.

I found sitting and gently rolling my hips on a gym ball for a while every day, and making sure I keep my pelvis level (ie not putting my weight on one hip more than the other) solved all my hip agony! I think it must just gradually loosen them up? It was terrible at about 28 weeks (I'm 32wks now) but the dr said a physio can't help unless it's constant and mine came and went.

I tried the doubled over duvet underneath me last night and it definitely helped a bit. I slept a bit longer at a time before waking in pain and the pain was a less too. Going to add another duvet I think!

I also did some hip exercises like poppy describes yesterday evening. I have done them most days though as they're part of the programme my fitness trainer has given me, but will make sure I do them every day and see if that helps too.
