I saw my midwife for the first time today and she said I shouldn't eat prawns. I LOVE prawns!

They are fine as long as they are cooked properly.

Here is the NHS advice.

I have eaten them when they have been cooked for example in a paella or curry but have kept clear of prawn sandwiches

My midwife (four years ago) told me that prawns would be fine if I cookedthem at home and knew they were correctly stored/cooked, but not to risk it in a restaurant, where you have no control over storage etc.

Annoyingly I have gone off them in pg even though I normally love them.

Same with alcohol and caffeine - I would in theory have no problem with having a glass of wine now and then and drinking tea/coffee but just don't fancy it.

I'm still eating them. As I don't eat meat and can't have too much dairy, I don't want to limit myself further and the advice isn't clear cut.

prawns are fine if they are well cooked. I beleive the advice is eat them if you have cooked them yourself and know how well they are cooked/not cross contaminated but avoid pre-cooked/restaurant/take away prawns unless you are certain they are cooked well enough and freshly.

Yes - eat those prawns! It's so frustrating when midwives give advice that conflicts with NHS guidelines and the Government's recommendations. If you want to read more about eating seafood while pregnant check out the Food Standards website
