Pregnancy

How did you find out you were pregnant ?

I am just doing this thing in work at the mo and we have been talking about where women buy pregnancy tests. We were thinking of where would be the best place to put information about accessing midwives as soon as women find out they are pregnant. I am 28 weeks pregnant and got some off e bay and a couple from Boots. Some colleagues did a mini survey and found that out of 50 pregnant women, 47 of them bought their tests from a supermarket. I am astounded by this and wanted to get a general idea of how representative this is. I am on the Jan 2010 ante natal club so will be asking there as well but if you bought a pregnancy test to find out if you were pregnant, where did you get it from ?
Thanks

A chemist. Supermarkets are very handy - and some even have a chemist within.

To answer the titled, I peed on a stick.

I bought a job lot of sticks from Sainsbury's when TTC.

What's the importance of accessing midwives straightaway when in our area they won't see you till you're at least 8 weeks?

With my dd (now 4) I bought test in boots, but thats because I was in work that day and worked, at the time in a shopping centre with boots just next door.

With my first pregnancy this year (MC) I bought test in Tesco, was just handiness, was in doing grocery shopping anyway.

With this pregnancy (due in Jan too!!) I bought test in Tesco, again cos its outside of the town and parking is easier.

thanks so far
Its not about seeing them straight away - my post was badly worded. In terms of accessing ante natal screening and advice such as taking folic acid and stopping smoking etc the ideal is to see a miwife within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The idea of getting information to women as soon as they find out they are pregnant is so that people know that they (in some areas) can text a midwife direct for appts rather than having to go through a GP

boots, on my local mini high street, looking round sneakily to make sure no-one I knew was anywhere nearby - that's probably why people get them in supermarkets - MUCH easier to hide!! I would have gone to supermarket but DH was away with car and had no transport.

Have bought tests from chemist, pound shop and Tesco.

Tesco is easiest if you don't want anyone seeing you tbh, just bung it in with the shopping. That is maybe why it is so popular, also easy as you are there anyway.

Sainsburys/tesco. Hidden under pile of other shopping. We know far too many people around here..
What difference does it make where the test is bought from? My doctor won't do a preg test unless it's 'an absolute emergency' and both times I've found out I was pg I made a doc apt and they didn't re test just took my word for it. (different sugeries btw)

I bought two First Response tests from Boots as they were on BOGOF (not because I was testing early). Then after two weeks, I was still struggling to believe they had both been positive (even with the morning sickness and enormous boobs) so I bought another twin pack of Clear Blue in Sainsbury's.

First one was one my mum had hanging around and she forced it on me, I just took it to shut her up tbh!

Second one I kept having false alarms (wasn't ttc but wary after first time) so had bought two or three the previous time I had been in poundland. Out of curiosity (we were considering starting ttc in a few months) I looked on the ovulation calender on here and realised I was a couple of days late, so did a test just to stop myself getting paranoid. I thought I must be seeing double when I saw two lines, I hadn't even told DP I was testing as I was so sure it would be negative, so he got a shock when I wandered into the living room looking confused at a wet stick!

With DD test came from massive out of town Boots (I sneakily left off early from friday night drinks leaving everyone I knew in a 10 mile radius in the pub, so could buy a test in privacy!) Unfortunately I couldnt tell dh where i was off to and he refused to budge, so had to do test and then drive back to the pub and get him as he was by then over the limit and in shock

Second time around, test came from Ocado [preen]

oh la di da I hear you cry

I bought about 500 from Ebay as I had a bit of a habit.... With DS2 I assumed it was going to take years again and bought faaaar too many

500 tests and you call that a habit! lol that made me laugh wow 500!

I thought the 6 I used was bad lmao

Report
turtle23 · 29/10/2009 06:47

(Ok, maybe not 500.)
I think I bought 50 OPKs and 20 pg tests at once. Did go and buy a "proper" test from chemist after the Ebay tests, though, just to be sure. I think with DS1 I took 6 tests AFTER getting first faint BFP...

6 isnt bad thats about the amount I did to look at the bfp! lol

Report
flyingcloud · 29/10/2009 07:03

The one that gave me the BFP came from the chemist but the majority of tests I bought came from the supermarket.

I bought from Boots... I bought two boxes of 2, as we were on the first month of TTC, so I assumed it would be negative and would need more. I got to the checkout, and the lady behind the counter said 'they're not on offer, you know?'. I replied 'that's fine, I'm just stocking up'!! Got a very strange look in return!!
Needless to say, it was positive after all my preparation, so I still have an unopened box, and needn't have embarrassed myself after all...

I got it from Boots as I was in there doing some shopping anyway. Was very restrained and only bought the one!

With DS Boots and with DD our local Sainsburys.

I didn't buy it myself; DP bought our pregnancy test. I was working from home and not intending to go out anywhere that day (3 or so days after period had been due), so he nipped into Superdrug in his lunch hour and bought a pack there. I suggested Superdrug own brand as the one to get because they are cheap . In defence of being a skinflint about something so important, I really didn't think I was going to be pregnant (first month TTC and thought I had fertility problems).
