Hello ladies

I used to post here before years back but have been absent for some time. Brief history is that I have PCOS and have also had failed IVF three years ago.

Recently I lost weight (about a stone) and my cycles became more regular. I'm 39 for those interested.

Anyway, got a + test last week much to my surprise and would consider myself just over 5wks pregnant. However, I did have some very faint brown spotting the weekend before I found out and the last two days have also had some cramping accompanied by spotting when I wipe late in the evening and during the early hours. This has happened after sex and I'm wondering whether I have anything to worry about?

I've read so much on the internet that cramping/spotting is normal but having lost 2 embryo's on the IVF cycle i'm just waiting for this spotting to get going.

Can anyone allay my fears, maybe share similiar stories? Every time I get a 'sensation' or feel uncomfortable or get a twinge/cramp I panic.

Hi there, I had spotting cramping etc at about 8 weeks was terrified but now have a gorgeous 14 month old boy. You should ask you Midwife/GP to send you to an early pregnancy clinic where they do a scan, it really helps to put your mind at rest. I know what you mean about the panicking I am 5 months pregnant with number two so have done it all before but still panic like mad when feel anything slightly out of the ordinary. Goodluck with the pregnancy I hope all is ok.

Hi Rebecca

I remember feeling exactly the same in both of my PGs. It is totally normal to feel worried about your baby, especially with your history. I had spotting and slight cramping through out the early part of both of mine and remember constantly examining the loo paper with a sense of dread! I also had three episodes of bleeding in my second at 4 weeks, 8weeks and 13 weeks. Neither of my pregnancies ended in m/c, although we did decide to terminate the 1st due to hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Obviously it is not the same situation as yours at all, but I do think that losing my first baby meant that I was even more worried throughout my second pregnancy.

You have every chance of having a perfectly normal pregnancy ahead of you, cramping and spotting IS perfectly normal, and can mean absolutely nothing. Try to relax (hard I know!) as stress is not good for you. Good luck with everything. Take it easy on yourself You are bound to find bits of it hard. Try to enjoy it too.

Thank you for your input. I isited my Doctor yesterday as I was due to take a long drive and was worried. He has drawn blood and is having a BHCG test done, the results of which i should get today/tomorrow. This morning I feel less tender/crampy but continued to see the faint browny spotting when i went to the loo yesterday. I know there is nothing i can do but to try and stay positive and relaxed. Hard to do though! I find myself checking other symptoms constantly, like do my boobs feel as tender/look different, do I feel as sick or not ... torturous!

My BHCG test came back today at over 2000, and the Doctor describes this as an ongoing pregnancy. I've to go back for a further test on Tuesday to see what the levels are then. Still having slight brown spotting in the afternoons/evenings and some cramping in the PM also. Let's see what the NEXT week holds!

Gosh, I have no experience of cramping/spotting, but just wanted to say that I wish you the best of luck and will be thinking of you.

Just wanted to say all the best, I had something similar when I was pg and my consultant at the hospital advised me to avoid sex just in case. He said it was unlikely to cause a mc but could cause the spotting and I should try to avoid the stress and worry that could be caused by any further spotting. Just thought I'd pass that on.

Hi RebeccaFE

I'm just about 5 weeks pregnant and had some cramping and brown spotting today, I searched in MN and feel more relaxed now after seeing how common it is. Also brown blood is supposedly 'old' blood that could be left over in the uterus for a number of reasons and comes out with everything shifting down there so knowing that helped put my mind at ease!

Good luck with your tests, I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything works out fine for you

Went back to the docs today to get more blood drawn, and got the last levels confirmed which were 2965. Therefore hoping that this next result gives me a result of more than 7500.

Still getting some achy pains and the scantest of brown smudges when I wipe, but mostly in the afternoon/evening. So, every thing crossed.

I have 2 daughters aged 8 & 6. Got pregnant on honeymoon adn then 18 months later and both pregnancies a breeze. Last year we thought we'd try for a third (very greedy, I know) but had mc 1 at 5 weeks. 6 months later, mc 2 at 5 weeks. The following month pregnant again adn this time really cruelly had 12 week scan and baby was fit and robust. At 18 weeks I gave birth to stillborn. Hideous, emotional time. Now, having not being trying to get pregnant as still grieving (my baby boy was due on 17 Nov) have had positive pregnancy test which makes me almost 7 weeks. So scared. Amm going to see if I can have early scan as I have terirble stomach cramps and no other pregnancy signs. No sicknes, nothing. Has anyone ever had no pregnancy symptons and gone on to give birth? This is the 1st time I have used Mumsnet.

Hi just letting you know this thread is from 2009, so most of the people have probably moved on.

Id say go back to your gp and if you're in pain got the hospital. Some people bleed in pregnancy and are fine, for others its just not ment to be.

Hope things work out for you.
