Controlled water break in theatre. Anyone had this?

I'm going to be 39 weeks on Friday and I have polyhydramnios.

I have loads of excess fluid and the midwife I saw today thinks that they may do a controlled water break in theatre. I was quite shocked and didn't ask all the questions that flooded my brain.

So if the waters break and there's no problem, will I get a normal delivery? Do your contractions start straight after they break? If it goes wrong and the cord pops out will I get a general anasthetic or a spinal?

Anyone with any knowledge would be most welcome, I'm pretty scared.

Oh my word... sorry I can't offer any advice but just wanted to say good luck, sounds nerve wracking! I hope everything goes well for you.
Hopefully someone will come along soon who can offer you all the advice you need.

I had controlled water break due to Poly with 4th dc.

2 mw and doc present.

attatched to monitor whole time

mw1 held baby high in my tummy with her hands on outside of my abdomen

mw2 broke waters and literally stemmed the flow with her hand, moving it away little by little, she was sitting next to me on bed and was soaked.

doc was observing and ready to go into theatre if needed, it wasn't

Took a while as they couldn't le go of baby until waters had drained but wasn't painful, bit uncomfortable cos baby didn't like being held still, TBH was even quite funny.

Had natural labour after that, needed monitoring but still moved about etc etc.

Hope it goes well for you. You know what to do if waters go naturally don't you? Down onto all 4's and call 999.

Thanks Brat

Liahgen - Thank you so much for explaining how it would all work, it's really reassured me. I did wonder how they would stem the flow of waters, it sounds rather awkward but hey there's no dignity in childbirth anyway

I was hoping for a water birth like I had with dd but I don't think it'll be at all possible now. I just want my baby to be okay.

Thanks again.

Confuzzeled when are you due?
Got redirected here by Liahgen - havn't got PH but a non-engaged bb's head and MW indicated possibility of CRM in theater would I go over. Was pretty spooked at the time so probably didn't quiz her enough. Yet again, would water break early on, I know I'll be on all 4s etc... it pretty much rules out any "birth fantasy" I might have had...
