transvaginal scan at 30 weeks, why?

We just got back from a trip to the gynaecologist (we're living in Germany) for a scan. I'm 30 weeks tomorrow. DP only comes for the scans not the normal appts and was excited to see wee gaga of course - so imagine our horror when requested to remove my pants for a transvaginal scan. WTF?

Poor DP had to wait outside as he struggles with female anatomy (when I met him he thought women peed through their vaginas) and there's not much point sending my mum a scan pic of my cervix is there?

So disappointed!

Might be something they do to measure length of cervix? I had this (in addition to abdominal scan) at my 23 week scan.

Yes, it was to check my cervix was closed.

Do they do this in the UK? The only transvaginal one I had was at 6 weeks to find the heartbeat.

I was told it was time for my 30 week scan, and DP booked an afternoon off work, and all for a quick look up my fanjo to see if my cervix was closed.

Scans are such special moment and we were really excited!

Of course, I'm being silly because the important thing is the pregnancy is healthy so seeing the little wriggler in grainy black and white is the least of it -

but still, disappointing!
