Early scans - better to have one at 7wks, 8wks or 9wks??

I wonder if anyone can help with my question about when to have an early scan? My feeling is to have one done at about 9wks but I wondered what other people's views were?

I've had early scans with 3 out of my 5 pregnancies and always at about 7 weeks. This is when they can see the heartbeat. When I have gone at 7 weeks, and we have seen the heartbeat it helped me relax a bit more until the 12 week scan.
If you want to wait until 9 weeks, then wait but I don't think there's a massive difference tbh.
Goodluck

Hi I went for an early scan on Thursday this week. I was 10 weeks and 3 days (thought I was around 10 weeks so that was okay) Managed to get some great pics, saw babys heart beat and heard it, plus he/she wriggled a little bit.

The consultant said all was normal for 10 weeks as that was a good time to check, but anytime I think would be okay around 9-10 weeks onwards.

Congratulations and good luck

Nancy I had scans at 6wks and 8wks due to complications and we saw the heartbeat on both. Though TBH there was very little to see on either of them, just a little blob and then a slightly bigger blob. That being said, I've never been so happy to see a little blob!!

Many thanks for your replies . I had a 7wk scan with my last pg and saw the heartbeat but the heartbeat stopped at 10.5wks and I had MMC at 12wks. I'm going on holiday at the start of my 8th week so I think I'll have a scan when I get back - which will be at the start of my 9th week.

Hi Nancy
I have had miscarriages as well and at the Early Pregnancy Unit they have said to wait until 8 weeks because (I think) the statistics go up massively then if you see a live baby. I have seen heart beats at 7 weeks and then gone on to miscarry so although the waiting is really hard I can see why 8 weeks might be better. Good Luck anyway.

I had an early scan at 6 weeks dues to a lot of pain and suspected ectopic, thankfully all turned out fine, I am now 10weeks

You could see quite a bit on mine, the pic is posted on my profile on here if you would like to see.

Good luck and really hope things go really well for you.

xx

wow I was just about to post the exact same question so will jump in here if I may as seems like NancyPreg and I are in same boat but slightly dif scenarios.

MMC last "cycle" at 10 weeks emby stopped developing at "6weeks" from measurements but since I had a viable pregnancy scan at 6 weeks 3 days then I suspect it was more like 7 weeks.

Got pregnant again straight away no period in between and currently debating 1st scan putting me out of my misery. I defo don't want one before 8 weeks because of the stats and what happened last time but waiting til 9/10 weeks seems forever away (and 10 weeks was MMC so I guess depends if I even get that far!). So anyhow I am 8 weeks the weekend of glasto- so I could either have one the day before I go (but if its bad news ruin glasto for everyone) or after- but then will be almost 9 weeks by then. Think better after incase Glasto causes any issues too. Hmmm bet I could get an appointment for the Tuesday after Glasto- 8+5 weeks Hang on think
I just answered my own question there!
So I will shut up now and go away. Sorry for a completely pointless hijack. But at least am saved embarrasment of starting my own thread to answer my own question .
Good luck everyone.
x

Yay for Leningrad being 30 weeks. Not long now!

NancyPreg what stage are you now? I am only 4weeks and 3days (but testing positive(ish) since about a week ago) so it all feels frightening and new again but last time I was excited as I was convinced I wouldnt lose it. Fool!

Hi Thandeka, I'm just over 4wks too. I will aim to have my early scan after my holiday when I'll be over 8wks because what would I do if my scan was bad at 7wks? Risk going on holiday and bleeding out whilst away from home or cancel and miss our only real break this year? OTOH, I could have a 'good' 7wk scan and things could still go awry on holiday.....so, I will wait until after our break, which isn't abroad but is still some way from home, and keep my fingers crossed!

wow great scan pic.
how is it you can all get a scan so early just by asking?
i found out i was pregnant after a three week bleed and they basically wrote me off asking me to drop in a urine sample so they could confirm a positive which they did a week later and now i have to wait two weeks to see mw who will attempt to date me as i have no idea how far along i am or even if baby hb is still there!

I think for many of us it is because we have had a miscarriage previously. Although for my last pregnancy I also got an early scan because I had unexplained pain and cramping particularly in left hand side so they needed to rule out ectopic. Unfortunately despite a viable scan with heartbeat and everything that emby stopped growing shortly after and I miscarried 4 weeks later.

I think it's good you are being able to see a midwife within 2 weeks- and the only way she will be able to date you accurately is by doing a scan so you may be able to get on then or at least an appointment for one. Especially since you had a 3 week bleed sounds like you need a scan just to try and find out what if anything caused that.

i have had two mc but had 2 babies since.
i find tha health professionals are quite dismissive in the first trimester and not the most sympathetic. when i had the results back from hospital it said i was to see a mw asap but the earliest i could get was 2 weeks which could take me 12+ if my last period is anything to go by!
sorry i am just venting!

I will go at 6 weeks next time.
Have always found out my news at around about the 6 weeks mark, was able to get on with things from there and not have to wait.

Mine have always turned out badly, but i want to know sooner rather than later for practical and emotional reasons.

Thandeka · 02/06/2009 13:51

Bethoo sorry your experience has been so grim, sorry I misread your post as I took it you had to wait a week for the results and then an appointment in 2 weeks to see MW making it three weeks which I thought wasn't bad going! Yeah does sound like your PCT insn't great on that front- have you thought about complaining to PALS?

Endless- I had excellent scans at 6 weeks- heartbeat, right size etc. but it still ended badly at 10 weeks so now i am of the opinion too early may still not give you the result you want as at 6 weeks even if you see a heartbeat there is still a 24% chance of miscarriage I think but by 9 weeks it drops to 2% (or something like that) but then that is based on my experience not yours and I completely understand why 6 weeks is when you want to get seen next time.

yes, my 4 mcs have all been blighted ovums, which show up at 6 weeks but dont mc the poc till 12/13/14 weeks, its a long time to wait when you think everything is ok, OR knowing that it is not, waiting to mc.

Report
bethoo · 02/06/2009 14:21

yes it took over a week for my results to get back even though they use the same ones we get from the chemist!
i have started spotting again so am waiting for a call from gp and will ask him to refer me to ear;y preg unit as called them and they said i had to gbe referred. why they did not refer me when i had a 3 week bleed three weeks ago i will never know! but then i think they presumed it was a miscarriage and the hormones would be out my system but a month later i am still having pos test results! i hate the not knowing whether the baby is goen or not you know?

endless i had a mmc, i had had a scan at 7 weeks that showed a hb but then i was cramping terribly and just felt that something was not right. when i went for my 12 week scan it had died shortly after my 7 week scan but i had not bled. i actaully started bleeding that day and ended up having to go to hospital as heamoraghed. it was like labour passing the placenta which was huge.
