Pregnancy

20 weeks with twins & just discovered I've had Salmonella infection

I am so scared, I just wondered if anyone else has been unfortunate enough to have had a salmonella infection in pregnancy and if so what was the outcome?

I have been really ill for about 7 days with severe gastroenteritis and although i am feeling much better in the last 2 days I've just got the test results back from the GP which confirmed presence of salmonella.

I've read some frightening stuff about miscarriage and have no idea what harm may have been caused to my babies and what could still happen.

Please help if you can, I will speak to my Dr of course but i am so worried in the meantime.
thank you
Charlie

Don't panic, salmonella won't harm or damage your babies - it's just very nasty for you. www.babyandpregnancy.co.uk/ToxoplasmosisListeriaSalmonella.html

how worrying for you. i'd ring gp/midwife straight away for some reassurance.

i always thought salmonella didn't cross the placenta but i may be utterly wrong. anyway this isn't somethign you should be worrying about all by yourself, you need some info.

I also didn't think salmonella could be harmful to the baby. Hope you are reassured by the doctor CharlieKat.

Hi CharlieKat

Sorry to hear you've had salmonella. I think the only risk to your babies is if your temperature gets very high and it sounds like you are now past the worst of the illness so your babies are likely to be absolutely fine, especially as you are quite far into your pregnancy.

Hope the dr calls soon to reassure you and that all is well.

I was told salmonella was fine for gestating babies, it's toxoplasmosis and listeria that can harm them. It's just really, really awful for the mother because her immune system is functioning less effectively.

Feel better soon.
