TMI alert! - nipples at 27 weeks

Sorry about this girls bit embarrassing but I have dry flaky skin on my nipples - have not changed products or anything but they're quite itchy at the mo. No rash or anything, but the skin on the areola/dark bit is not as soft as it normally is. It looks like I need to seriously exfoliate them!!

Also, is it normal for colostrum (yellowish colour) to come out of only one nipple at this stage? There is only clear liquid coming out of the other one.

could be that the flakiness is dried colostrum, you don;t need to do anyhting, just wash and dry your breasts and nipples as you would do normally, it is perfectly ok to leak a bit a this stage. the more you fiddle, the more you will leak ! use a soft supportive bra and breastpads at night if you are waking up in a pool of milk!!

I leaked from about 27 weeks when was pg with DS...would wake up in the morning with very attractive patches on my jammies....never have I looked so alluring...

i just posted this on oct antenatal thread... asked dr on phone about it today and he told me I am probably "imagining" anything coming out... but stain is on my shirt when I wake up in the morning!!

Anyway, for dry skin around, I use the Lansinoh (sp??) nipple cream - that's what a friend recommended and it cleared dry skin right up and made it soft again in no time (like a few days).

lulumama - if you start leaking this fluid early on like this, then does the baby still get that really important first bit (colostrum) or is it all gone by the time it arrives since they started leaking early?

oh no, you will not run out !! when the baby is actually born , there are massive hormonal changes that take place , and the baby going to the breast to suckle, all mean colostrum is there ready and then the milk comes in around day 3 - 5 usually. so no , there is no chance of running out of the colostrum before the birth,even if you are leaking now

ok will have to try lansinoh. Is it true you can get lansinoh on prescription? do I have to request it from my doctor?

I'm not sure if you can get it on prescriptoin. It is like £9.95 or something like that... so a bit expensive, but it truly works and you know it's safe...etc. And you can use it while breastfeeding, too, so it won't go to waste and you'll only need a bit to clear that up for now anyway probably.

I'm also an early leaker lol! Am coming up to 28 weeks and started leaking at 23 weeks! Is only clear for me, is that normal or is it meant to be yellow/white? Stock up on nipple pads you'll probably start needing them in the day as well, I've been using them in the day for the past 2 weeks as mine are starting to leak at random intervals now
