erythromycin? (Antibiotics question).

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of using this antibiotic in pregnancy? I am 16 weeks and doing great apart from inflamed veins in upper arms (looks like phlebitis, which I have had in leg before - yuk!) My GP prescribed erythromycin 500mg 4x daily for 7 days after much umming and erring - he wasn't really keen to prescribe anything, to be honest.

I understand this drug is generally considered ok in pregnancy, but suddenly I am no longer my usual gung-ho self about taking medicine - this sounds like pretty strong stuff, and I don't know why he didn't just prescribe amoxicillin, as I am not allegic to penicillin? I have been wondering whether to wait a week and see if inflammation self-clears (not like me at all!)

Has anyone had any experiences of using this antibiotic? What would your inclinations be? Many thanks.

I had ab when 19 weeks preg but not sure which one, had no side effects and ds2 ok. I had a very bad cough that wouldnt go away and I kept putting off going to docs as I dont like taking medication when preg, 5 weeks later ending up going to docs still coughing but also with broken rib (though coughing) and I got a big telling of from doc as I had a chest infection and apparently temperatures can make you go into premature labour so it was actually safer to go on ab

I'm taking this stuff for a chest infection and for the first couple of days i was sick It has got better since, but was not fun at the time.

I think that if you are not 100% happy about taking them and your inflamed veins are not causing you too much grief i would wait and go back to the docs and have a word about other treatments.

I'm sure the antibiotics are fine, but i also know what pregnancy worries are like

I'm on the same antibiotic (same dose) for a bloody awful chest infection - I have a fab doc and she reassured me that this is fine when pg.

I take mine on a full stomach to try and prevent the sickness (doc warned me about this) and have been fine so far....

Ive taken Augmentin antibiotics during this pregnancy. One lot at 20w and then another at 32w. I checked with 2 x doctors, my consultant, midwife and Boots pharmasist and they all said that they were ok to take during pregnancy.

If your Doctor thinks it is OK then it should be. I am allergic to penicillin and have had it before - it made me feel really sick. Ds1 was given it when he was 3 and did not react well to it at all, I wrote in his red book at the time I would never allow him to have ethromycin again.

had a ear infection I was giving amoxicillin which didn't clear it and then erythromycin 500mg to takke 4 times a day for 5 days when I was 22 weeks pregnant I checked with the pharmacist and they said it should be fine. So I took it and it did make me feel sick but it did take are of my ear infection. But I ve have been so very so worried and terrified it might of affected the baby's development in some way. I hate taking anything when pregnant and feel very paranoid about it. ? As dont usually taken antibiotics at all and wish hadn't a ear infection. Doctor said everything was developed at 22 weeks but I still dont feel any better
