Induction due to Big baby?

laura1306 · 20/02/2018 18:54

Has anybody been induced because their baby is big. I'm 33 weeks and measuring at 37. He weighs almost 6lb now and the consultant talked about induction and definitely not letting me go past my due date but I didn't understand how soon and she's booked me in for a 'final appointment' at 36 and to discuss it. Anybody had any experience of this?

Would like to follow this thread. Sorry I have no advice. I am currently 29 weeks measuring 32. X

Keen to find this out, also measuring on the large side.

I was told that a big baby was no reason for induction. Their guesses are often completely off anyway.

I had a homebirth with one of mine. They estimated his weight to be around 8lb with scans and measurements. He was born weighing just over 11lbs.

My others were 8.13, 9.7, 8.1, and 6.15. They did induce the smallest at 38 weeks. Partly because of her size and partly because of a health problem.

The induction was fine.

Could you/would you want to push for c section?

I'd never want a C section no matter how big he got that's why I'm happy of the induction talk before he gets too large. I'm also struggling with SPD and being monitored for obstetric cholestasis and have recurring water infections and my iron levels are awful and not improving. I don't know if some of these are the reasons for induction also but my consultant definitely seemed keen to discuss at my next appointment and the scan is the final one after having one every 3/4 weeks which confused me if I were to make it full term.

I have been told I'd been induced early due to big baby and small me.. Booked in for c-section at 39 weeks as a last resort. Possibly earlier induction before that..
In saying that latest scan showed growth may have slowed (now I'm worrying about that) another one on Monday and if that is the case I've been told they will induce at 37 weeks.. Currently 35+5..
Have you had b12 levels looked at? My iron is low also but blood tests then showed that the real issue was my b12 was through the floor... (Discovered as had mentioned my mum had that when pregnant with me)

Hi @laura1306, hope everything is going well for you? I am just wondering if they did induce you and you've had your little one? Or are you still waiting? I had a growth scan today and baby is currently weighing 8lb 10oz at 36 weeks! I'm seeing my midwife tomorrow and going to see about being induced because he's big. X

Well they wouldn’t let me (or rather, advised against it) over 41 weeks due to size but he was only 9lb11.5oz (I say “only”!!!) but it was only 0.5oz more than my first... then this time they want to give me growth scans. But I don’t really see a point. I naturally delivered both of them with no pain relief or intervention, I honestly don’t see why they need to be concerned over the size.

Btw I measured a few week ahead every single checkup

Thanks @FranticallyPeaceful. I've always measured big with the tummy measurements, at 34 weeks I was measuring 43. I'm going to see what my midwife says tomorrow, I can imagine they won't induce just because of the size, but I also have gestational diabetes which is making his stomach grow bigger. First time mummy and panicking at everything lol x

I was in a similar situation with my first. Measured consistently large for dates and I was worried about delivering naturally. I was repeatedly told that they only worried about small babies, not large ones and that measurements were often wrong.

In the end, after mentioning it lots at each appointment, the consultant agreed I could be induced at 40wks although that was officially because it was an IVF pregnancy, not because of the size. I was induced, but it failed and I never got beyond 7cm after 50 hours of induction. DC was born by EMCS and weighed 11lbs. I'm not sure what to think - he was too large for me to have delivered vaginally (surgeon said as she was doing my CS that he was never making it out my pelvis) but I only ever got to 7cm so even if he had been 6lbs I still couldn't have delivered him.

This time round baby is measuring large again (6 weeks ahead of dates) and I've opted for a section. I've felt very well supported in that choice by the clinical staff.

Of course many people have very successful inductions and happily deliver babies that are larger than average. Hopefully you will fall into those camps!

@ReadyMeals thank you for your story, but wow 11lb, that's impressive!

I guess I can ask to be induced at 40 weeks and see what happens, ideally I don't want to go over, as I have such a fear of still birth :( I've had previous losses, and this is the furthest I have got. Will explain all my worries to my midwife and take it from there. The sonographer questioned if I was being induced or waiting for natural labour, which made me think if more people do get induced. Hopefully I will know more tomorrow x

I was induced anyway due to other reasons but my consultant told me in the end he was only going to let me go to my due date anyway as he was a big baby. Don't know if the same rules apply at other hospitals?

Congratulations @laura1306!

I am being induced next Wednesday due to big baby and diabetes. So hopefully will have my little man by the end of next week. How did your induction go? How long did it take for you to have him? X

It was my second induction and my first took about 25/26 hours with just one pessary and my second they burst my waters and put me on the drip after around 4 hours. The whole process second time round was only 10 hours! Good luck for next Wednesday, I'm sure it won't take too long, they've improved so many of the methods now even since my first 2 years ago! x

Ah thank you @laura1306! 10 hours isn't too bad at all 😊 I am hoping mine isn't too long either.

Enjoy your little bundle of joy 💐 xx
