Freaking out!!!

Ok I'm freaking out.....
I'm 7 weeks but I keep getting a sharp pain (bit like a stitch) in my lower right abdomen.
I told the doc and he is sending me for a scan in 2 days (was meant to be earlier buy I couldn't get time off work)
This morning I coughed and had the most painful sharp pain in my lower left abdomen. It took a few seconds for me to dare to stand straight after.

I'm really freaking out that it's an ectopic pregnancy.

What should I do? Hubby is away until tomorrow so don't know who to ask (nobody knows yet)
If it was you, Would you wait for the scan in 2 days?
Or go to the hospital on your own.

This is my first and im 34 if it makes any difference.

If you get a pain in your shoulder go to A&E straight away as that is the hallmark of an ectopic.

If you are in severe pain or start bleeding I'd phone the EPU directly and see if they can see you today.

I think it's possibly just ligament or stretching pain - very common in early pregnancy. If the pain just happened at the cough and then passed I think you're ok to hold out for the scan, which will tell you for sure. However, if you experience increasing pain or any prune-juice-like bleeding, do go to hospital straightaway.

Does it only happen when you cough or move or is it constant, even if you are lying down and resting? The coughing makes me think it's round ligament pain. It's excruciating pain when you make any sudden movement - coughing and sneezing is horrible! I get it when I stand up or twist. If that's the only time you get it, not when lying down or sitting and resting, I wouldn't be too worried about it. It's completely normal and a sign that your body is making all the right pregnancy hormones and doing exactly what it should be doing.

If the pain is constant and you truly feel unwell, dizzy, feel like you are going to pass out, have any bleeding, etc. then I would go to the hospital urgently (are you in the UK? I mean by this to the EPU, not to A&E, they are useless there). If you are otherwise feeling okay, the pain is only sporadic, no bleeding, I would wait until your dh can go with you. Realistically, if anything is wrong, there is nothing they can do, but you absolutely will want someone there to support you. If you are in so much pain you're losing consciousness or bleeding heavily, it's a bit more of an emergency situation for you and you want to make sure you get it checked.

I have had a mc and nothing you're describing sounds overly worrying to me. I actually had no cramps or pain at all with my mc and only the tiniest bit of spotting (baby stopped developing at 5 weeks and I had to have a d&c at 11 weeks because nothing was happening). Whereas I've had the same sort of sharp pains you describe plus heavy bleeding in all my healthy pregnancies. So personally, unless it's an emergency situation for you, I'd wait for your dh. If it's nothing, there's no reason to rush, but if it isn't good news, you'll be grateful he could be there with you. Hoping for positive news for you.

Pain when coughing just sounds like round ligament pain.

Thanks everyone!

No bleeding or pain in shoulder.
The pain in my right side is on and off constantly when I am sitting. Fine when I lay down and rest.
The pain in my left was a sudden sharp pain when I coughed. Not felt it since and been about 2 hours now.
I work in IT so I am sitting hunched over a desk all day so im pretty uncomfortable anyway.

I will take your advise and wait till my scan unless there is bleeding or extreme constant pain.
And yes I would definitely want someone with me if it was not good news, didn't think about that.

Thank you all, put this old girls mind at rest for a bit. Smile

It's pretty scary not knowing what's going on with your body but having nobody to ask!

I had this around about the 6/7 week mark and, like you, totally panicked. My first thought was an ectopic pregnancy so I contacted the EPU after LOTS of googling (bad idea!) and they got me in for an early scan which thankfully showed everything was ok.
I’m now only 11weeks but the pain has totally gone. Think it’s just things settling and stretching.
Hope you’re ok and try not to worry.x

Ah that's lovely news to hear Kitcat Smile (aside from the morning sickness of course - I hope that subsides. Try eggs and brown toast and Vegemite for vitamin B which can help).
