I had my very first smear at the age of 30 --- was way to scared before hand
Anyway that was March
I only got my results back 3 weeks ago which show hpv virus and abnormal cells so I've been booked in for a colposcopy (have no clue what this is) anyway today I found out I'm pregnant

My questions are
Will hpv effect my pregnancy
With having cells removed from the cervix can they do this if your pregnant

I'm so scared that if I leave this and don't sort it then I'll get the dreaded c word but at the same time I've been waiting for my bfp which I'm over the moon to get but now anxious about it all

Any help ladies

Contact the clinic and tell them your pregnant. I doubt they will be able to do it. Congratulations

HPV won't affect your pregnancy and is rare that it would be passed onto the baby.

This exact thing happened to me. They will look at your cervix while pregnant and then again about 12 weeks post partum. They will not remove any cells until after pregnancy. Don't worry. Just ring up the nurse colposcapist number probably on the letter and they will explain. Congrats btw!

They 100% cant remove the cells whilst your pregnant, just give them a call and see what they suggest to do.

I had hpv, a colposcopy and then surgery with some kind of laser to remove abnormal cells. They kept a special eye on me on pregnancy but in the end it was a normal natural birth.

I had a Primary Out real of Genital HPV at 7 months pregnant and it nearly killed my DD. Not trying to scare you, just being honest. I had sores up my urethra and my bladder stopped working. Was on a Catheter for weeks unable to move even in the slightest bit. Had to have Gas & air to have the catheter removed. They said to me that if I am mid-outbreak burning birth and the HPV passes on to baby it will most likely kill her. It did pass on to her but thankfully she's ok.

The difference with you is that they can put you straight onto Acyclovir. I however had no clue about the HPV which seemingly came from my DD's Dad according to tests.

Pregnancy brings out HPV outbreaks the Consultant told me. However he also said that actually, 90% of the population CARRY the Herpes virus but not all of us have a primary outbreak. Good luck xxx

The beginning was meant to say "I had a Primary Outbreak of Genital Herpes"

I'm not ashamed to admit it, as like my Consultant said, 90% of us have it!

If you've ever had a cold sore.........

HPV is not the same as genital herpes.

Hpv is a virus and can cause genital warts can't it? I don't even understand the thing

HPV is not the same as herpes (maybe the previous poster is thinking of HSV which is Herpes Simplex Virus.)

HPV is unlikely to impact on your pregnancy in any way. Usually the immune system 'clears' HPV on its own. There are many strains of HPV, some cause warts, some high risk grades can accelerate changes in cells of the cervix.

They are unlikely to do any treatment whilst pregnant but they can do if the risk is high, which they can assess when you go to colposcopy. I would call them, explain you've just found out you're pregnant and see what they say. They will probably ask you to attend as planned and avoid doing any invasive treatment but keep an eye on you.

My first smear showed hpv virus and abnormal cells, I had a colposcopy, they just wanted to double check, they put a camera up my lady bits and then a dye that turns the abnormal cells white (none of them turned white so they didn't need to do anything further) xx

Hello.

Really sorry that you're going through this.

I had this but not when pregnant so can't offer advice about that but can offer some reassurance.

I had my first smear and found out I had hpv and cin 3 cells.

Absolutely freaked out and felt like the world was going to end.

I went and had a loop incision. It wasn't a comfortable experience but the staff were wonderful. My bf came in for the procedure and I found that very reassuring to have them.

After the procedure I took turmeric tablets not prescribed but took them.

Then had a letter saying the samples they took were not cancerous and then had to go back for a second smear at the hospital.

Got the results back and the hpv had gone and no more treatment needed!

I was terrified but it all was ok. HPV is really common and is transmitted sexually but they don't count it as a sexually transmitted disease.

The cells that they have detected might never turn into anything nasty. They remove them as a precaution.

Hope this helps x

JustDontGetItAll - Genital warts and genital herpes are NOT the same thing.

Some strains of HPV can cause genital warts but it will never cause herpes. This is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) which is a totally different virus

Kleigh612 - Firstly, well done for plucking up the courage to go for your smear. It's a really important thing to have done. I had a colposcopy and removal of cells 3 years ago but not while pregnant. I had CIN3 cells like KayLea1988. From what I can remember these are cells with the most amount of changes that make them precancerous cells before they become cancerous. I don't know if this is the type of cells you have. You should phone them as suggested by others and inform them you are pregnant. My guess is that they will still look at your cervix and apply the dye to show abnormal cells. If you have any I would have thought they would not advise against having them removed whilst pregnant. They can advise you what the next steps will be. Hope this helps

JustDont herpes and warts are 2 completely different viruses.

Herpes causes blisters, warts cause, well, warts Hmm

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is linked to some wart strains but has nothing to do with herpes, which is a completely different virus (HSV, or Herpes Simplex Virus).

Hi @kleigh612 I can't offer any advice about Colposcopy while pregnant etc but last year I had my routine smear and it came back with CIN 1 changes and HPV I was devastated I too thought of cancer, knew nothing about HPV and thought hubby would think I'd cheated.

I had the colposcopy and had to have a second as they took an insufficient sample the first time. I didn't find them comfortable and took my hubby or mum with me. A few weeks later got the letter confirming nothing to worry about.

I'm sat here waiting for my next smear test terrified it'll be another bad result this time

Congratulations on your pregnancy speak to the nurses they are lovely xx
