Panic stations... ZIKA.

I fell pregnant exactly 5 months after returning from Florida. I thought we were safe after 8 weeks however just read that for males its 6 months! We were both in Florida and now im freaking out. Ive tried to find if we can be tested but apparently they are only reliable if you have symptoms at the time. Neither of us had symptoms, i had a few spots but could have been heat spots. DP had none that we can remember. What on earth do i do?! The midwife and GP didnt even asked at my early scan... Im so scared.

men can be tested privately (test is about £350) and you don't need to have shown symptoms etc. I think NHS will only test if you have shown symptoms. There was a thread on this a few days ago -

I'm no expert but would a scan of baby help to identify if anything is wrong?

Also now worried- our doctor told us when we were travelling we only needed to wait 6 months if there were any symptoms within 8 weeks

How do you usually react to mosquito bites? If I get bitten I wouldn't mistake them for heat rash so I would know if I had been bitten.

Miami was the worst effected I think and only in 2 main hot spot, could have been a couple of localised outbreaks in the keys but you should be able to find historical data of where the virus was. The mozzies that carry it are tiny and tend not to travel far so the outbreaks where very localised to specific areas, sometimes within a few streets.

Might not be 100% but at least you will know if where you were was low risk. Also might be worth a private scan and testing to put your mind at ease. Xxx

Your risk depends on where in Florida you went. The CDC has a map on their website showing the affected areas. In Florida itself it's mainly Miami-Dade county.

I'm 8 weeks and have been given clearance to travel to Orlando in two weeks.

I conceived same month as visiting Singapore where I was bitten by mossies.

For our trust (after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing as it's fairly new for them), they don't test you for the virus unless you show symptoms ( I haven't), but will book you in under a consultant for growth scans at 24, 28, 32 and 36 weeks and it's classed as high risk (but still anticipated to go to Midwife Led Unit for birth).

Ring your midwife. Ask her to find out what is done in your trust. Don't panic

Hi all.

Sorry, gave myself a headache with worry last night and had to go to bed

We were in Orlando (parks etc) and seen last night that they had 70 cases of ZIKA at my time of travel. All of them were travel related but as the virus was in the area it's still high risk.

With bites I normally get a little lump that itches, and I had a few lumps but no itch which is why I thought heat rash. 90% of the day time I had 50% DEET gel on all over. I stopped it and used 25%DEET spray in the last few days and at night as my skin was suffering.

I'm only 6 weeks so don't as yet have a midwife to phone unfortunately.

I'm at a loss as to what to do

You can still phone the midwife service you will be using?

I had booked in by that point as they'd had a slot free at 5 + 1 that I took (wish I hadn't now as it was such a long wait to the scan)

And it wasn't until a couple of weeks later that I actually thought about the Zika business and rang up and puzzles them. And no, I'm not usually that relaxed about things

So far all I know is I'm registered with a midwife at my local GP surgery. I got my appointment letter with the general number on it (switchboard)

I did but just got told I need to speak to midwife.

I gave in and called early pregnancy unit , waiting on them calling back

Nothing GP can do about ZIKA as it was too long ago so won't show on blood test. Just a case of wait n see. He did say chances of anything wrong would be slim, but certainly still possible.

Make sure you do mention it when you see midwife- when I thought it through and rang, they had to go away and check and even now, we have debates about which midwife appts I have to go to on top of the growth scans and there doesn't seem to actually be a coherent plan.....

@OnNaturesCourse I just found this thread and wondered how you got on with your pregnancy? I hope everything was OK after your Zika scare?
