Are babies really supposed to move 24/7?

Someone just told me that babies should only sleep/stop moving for 90 minutes max and they should move basically 24/7. Im 30 weeks and have an active baby -or so i thought- but he had certain times of the day (when i wake up, late afternoon and nighttime) and he is quite a strong kicker but between them times, i dont think he moves much or if he does, ive gone a blank and cant remember if he does or not. I'm fairly sure he doesnt move 24/7 though. Ive had countless scans & been monitored a good 5 times because i have anterior placenta and sometimes movement stops altogether, everytime he's been absolutely fine and i know that he moves on scans and i dont always feel him but should i be worried that he doesnt move 24/7??

Nope! DD went ages without moving I'd literally feel her move twice a day, I always worried but she's perfectly healthy! Very calm baby though so maybe she was just lazy Wink

Please read up about this on this website, it will give you the latest medical information etc.

Babies do move most of the time but we can't feel all of it!

God no. DD1 was really quite sluggish and I never really had masses of movement aside from the occasional kick and roll. Felt more on off small movements but often had times when I felt nothing for what seemed like ages then a flurry of activity then quiet again. She was perfectly fine. I'm currently pregnant with DD2 and her kicks have been much stronger and she definitely wriggles more but she has long spells of nothing too.

DS was a total lazybones, I remember lying in bed willing him to move and he never would. I went to hospital several times for no movement and had an extra scan but all was well and he was fine. He's 18mo now and a great sleeper so I think he was just destined to be lazy! Saying that, he was always like that, it wasn't a change in pattern or frequency as such - those things should always be checked.

This baby is much more active but I wouldn't say 24/7, it definitely moves quite frequently though and if I start to worry I don't have to wait long for a movement. Bet it never sleeps on the outside...

Sorry, there was no real advice there! What I should have said is that pattern is the thing to look for, not frequency, at least that's what I've been told.

Complete rubbish!!
I'm 34 weeks and only feel my baby move 3 or 4 times a day for short periods!
Also you will definitley feel less movement with an anterior placenta.

All 3 of my babies only ever seemed to move about late at night. All fine.

Utter bollox

I'm 36 weeks with 3rd
Currently she moves when I wake up
Then maybe every 2-3 hours she turns around for a couple of minutes

I'm pretty sure ds did 😂 But no they do have to sleep.

Nonsense! Mine moved a little bit during the day, not throughout the whole day. She came alive usually when I was trying to sleep. Apparently an ice cold drink can wake them up if you're worried. Mine always responded to music.

My daughter was so lazy, she barely moved at all...until I needed a scan any way then she was a right little fidget. Just go with what's normal for your baby, obviously if movements drop from your normal range then get it checked but I wouldn't worry about it moving less than guidelines state.

Also, this was quite a long time ago as I'm 30 now but when my mum was pregnant with me I didn't move a lot and they were a bit worried. The midwives told my mum to count that I was moving at least 10 times per day and as long as that was met it was no cause for concern. So that's certainly not all day long.

Depends on your baby. Ds1 hardly moved and had hiccups every night at 10. Ds2 thought I was his personal trampoline. Scraping nails down the inside, recognisable heels of his feet, back... He changed positions every day, horizontal then vertical. I felt bruised on the inside. One night he pushed my belly completely over one side, like the alien. Proper freaky.

Mine only used to come alive at midnight, every single night, I don't think I felt anything during the day.

I hardly ever felt DD1 move. Everyone said it was because of anterior placenta. She's 2.6 now, and doesn't bloody stop moving!
I'm 36 weeks with DD2 and feel her move a lot, I have an anterior placenta this time too. I've been to the hospital once so far due to reduced movement, never went with DD1.
I've never heard they should only have 90 minutes of inactivity a day. Each baby will have their periods of activity and inactivity, and it's their pattern you need to pay attention to. Any change in pattern needs to be checked.
