Baby Monitor Minefield

Hi All,

Completely overwhelmed with what to buy for our baby, ended up spending three hours last night on the internet trying to work out what to buy/what not to buy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good baby monitor that doesn't cost the earth?

We just have a Motorola one. It's was pretty cheap and works well.

I know lots of people use the video ones, but I decided against it. I thought (being a bit of a worrier) that I would be watching all the time analysing every twitch.

Honestly, you won't really need one at first. The baby will be with you until you're ready for bed! They aren't meant to sleep alone for the early months as the sound of an adult breathing helps to regulate their breathing. So no need to panic buy.

When you are ready, we have a BT 300 monitor. It's very basic - it's got a nightlight, and does sound only. But it's very clear and has good range. The battery life is a bit short, it won't last the entire night without being charged - but we don't need it to as we sleep right in the next room and always hear him. It was about £30.

I agree with Spudlet, you won't need it at first and it'll be just another thing to stress you out. Wait until you need one then you will have a better idea of which features you will need. Amazon Prime next day delivery was invented for new mums

Wait for Asda toddler and baby events. There's one this month, usually April and August. Everything is usually very cheap and they always include the baby monitors. X

we have the angelcare movement & sound one, still use it for dc age 2. such a reassurance as sometimes they have forgotten to breathe when moved in to their own room. can be picked up 2nd hand on ebay for around £20ish

Second the angelcare movement monitors... We've got the video, movement and sound and its ace. I probably wouldn't have slept a wink without it. Tend to only use the video if DC wriggles or cries to see if he is settling - you can switch it off so you don't sit watching it all evening.

Someone bought us a cheap motorola one but to be honest, we didn't and still don't really use it. In the early days the baby is with you pretty much 24/7. When they are big enough to be in their own room, unless you live in a mansion, you'll hear them cry!

We did take ours on a couple of holidays were they were useful, but one thing I noticed that would have been useful if you were thinking of using them in a more portable context (e.g. a camping holiday), is to get a set that can be used without mains power. Our baby unit needs to be plugged in, which is quite limiting.
