So, can I eat prawns or not?! Confused 😐

I'm getting really confused by the guidelines on this. I know raw ones are not allowed but what about a prawn cocktail sandwich? I've been really craving it! Any ideas? Would you eat prawns while pregnant?

According to the NHS website prawns are fine as long as they are cooked. And a little like smoked salmon, I'd guess if you get the frozen ones that'll kill anything.

I wouldn't have them out but I've eaten them at home so I know they are prepared properly and not been lying around for days.

That's the trouble, recently I always fancy a jacket potato or a sandwich with prawn cocktail at cafes when I'm out! And I suppose you can't entirely trust the food hygiene when you're out.

When I was pregnant with DS one of my cravings was prawn cocktail sandwiches!
Nothing bad happened and I ate A LOT.

I thought they were fine and I have been eating them. Had a prawn curry last night!

I didn't have them till after 12 weeks then just had small amounts. Only you know what feels right for you. :)

Prawns are fine.

Nobody in their right mind would eat a raw prawn, pregnant or not! I think you're confusing prawns with sushi/sashimi.

Exactly! They're grey and horrid looking!

Actually prawn carpaccio/ceviche/tartare is absolutely delicious!

Yep no problem with prawns, or any shellfish/seafood so long as it's cooked. Mussels, clams, scallops, all delicious! Just avoid the raw oysters. Sushi also fine so long as previously frozen, which most in the uk will be (certainly big chains like yo sushi).

For the sushi, I'd ask. Yo Sushi don't generally have their fish previously frozen...at least not according to the ones I've been to in Exeter and Bristol.

So the pink prawns you can buy in shops are cooked? I never really thought about it before Blush

I checked with yo sushi's head office and they said all their fish (in common with pretty much all uk sushi restaurants) is pre frozen. Strange that certain branches are giving out different information.

Yo Sushi told me that their salmon isn't pre-frozen, but that the FSA has found Norwegian farmed salmon to be very low risk for parasites and the freezing process damages the taste and quality. I ate a load yesterday and it was marvellous!

Pink prawns = cooked prawns = fine to eat! I loved prawns when pregnant with DC2 and ate loads both at home and out.
