I want to eat all the tuna

Hi everyone, this feels like the most ridiculous topic, but I just wondered if anyone knew much about tuna in pregnancy? I'm 9 weeks and all I want to eat is tuna mayo with sweetcorn, which I know I can't eat an awful lot of - so how much is too much? I read somewhere (think the NHS website) that you can have 4 cans a week, is this right?

I had a tuna jacket potato for dinner the past two nights and I should probably give it a miss tonight but my stomach is telling me that that would be the perfect dinner for the third night in a row. Is that too much tuna? That would be my third can in three days...

Most things are making me feel gross at the moment, its so odd that tuna is what makes me feel hungry! Any advice would be much appreciated!

I had a tuna sandwich or tuna jacket for lunch I reckon 5 out of 7 days for all of the first trimester... 27 weeks and baby is fine!

Tinned tuna is safe in pregnancy just limit it to once or twice a week.

Maybe you could mix something else with mayo and sweetcorn to make it similar (ISH?!)

I have craved for tuna in my pregnancy!! It's my favourite food right now! I told the midwife and she did say to be careful to monitor how much I eat though so I do think the 2 to 3 tins a week thing is important Sad
However my mum and grandma have both said they've never heard anything so daft and they ate what they liked 😂

I doubt pelagic fish had the same levels of heavy metals in them when your mum and gran were pregnant...

It's to do with mercury in the fish. 2 - 3 cans is your limit I'm afraid. Could you use half a tin and mix it with something else, such as red onion, peppers and sweetcorn to bulk it out?

I craved tuna and sweetcorn doorstep sandwiches in the first tri of my first pregnancy. I limited myself to one every Mon, Weds, and Fri morning tea break. Yep tea break, between breakfast and the 3 course meal work fed me at lunch everyday Blush Eating was the only thing that stopped me feeling sick... This time I broadened the craving to sushi Grin

Craving the tinned stuff is much better than fresh, as you can have more (as mentioned by a PP I think the limit is 3 cans/wk) and eek it out! I'd probably try to save that 3rd can for later in the week OP, otherwise 4 days could feel like a very long time. Alternatively ration yourself to 1/2 can today, and have the other half in a couple of days.

I ate a can-full every day when I was pg with DD, roughly wks 6-14. it was either that or starve. With hefty mayo. She is a bonny 14yo now.

I had the same obsession in my first trimester. Tuna (chilli) mayo and sweetcorn in salads, sandwiches, on toast, on baked potatoes...yum.

But yes, I'd usually make a bowlful using one can of tuna and then bulk it out with other stuff so it'd last 2 days (or at least 2 meals on the same day...). You're not supposed to eat too much, it is important.

You can have up to 4 x 140g of tinned tuna per week according to nhs

Thank you everyone! I forced myself to eat spaghetti instead last night (massively unsatisfying!!) so i'm free to eat tuna either today or tomorrow, woohooo! I think i'll get some peppers to stick in there, maybe some tomatoes...and maybe even some cucumber, that should bulk it up pretty well!!

Bippity - my mum said exactly the same, she also told me she drank copious amounts of caffeinated tea when she was pregnant with me and my sister and nothing happened to us, so I shouldn't be so precious about decaf haha Grin she's a real help!

Another one who craves tuna when pregnant! Last time I limited myself to a can every other day but this time I'm doing what PPs have suggested and am having half a can most days so I still get the taste!

That's just reminded me I dreamt about tuna mayo on a potato last night! You could try chicken sweetcorn and mayo as an alternative too.

Me too! I craved tuna throughout the whole of my pregnancy. Very early on in my pregnancy I started eating tuna omelettes, something I had never eaten before. I had one every day for a few week, weird! I think it was my body craving folic acid. Then I found out about limiting tuna and made myself resist. I know exactly what you mean though at work I would spend ages deciding what other sandwich I could bare to eat because all I wanted was the tuna sweet corn and nothing else. Glad it's not just me x
