I don't think you're meant to put on any weight in the first trimester, but I've been feeling so sick all day long for 6 weeks now, and the only think that helps is eating! I'd already out on a few pounds prior to conceiving due to hormones after removing my mirena coil; so now I'm getting concerned about weight gain throughout the pregnancy. At this rate I'm going to be the size of a house! Is anyone else struggling in the first trimester? Does weight management become easier in the second trimester? I'm not usually neurotic about my weight but serious alarm bells are going off about how big I'm going to get and how difficult it's going to be to lose it in 6 months!

Hey, first trimester weight gain is estimated between 1-5 lbs, so you're fine, don't worry :)

Your blood volume increases by 40-50% in pregnancy. Each litre weighs approximately 1kg. Say you had 5l originally that's an extra 2.5kg of blood alone, then you've got amniotic fluid, placenta etc. Your baby might be tiny but the effects on your body are far reaching. Step away from the scales!

I put on 2 kilos between booking in at 8 weeks and seeing the consultant at 13 so I was very concerned since my average overall gain should be between 5kg and 9kg (high bmi). However when I had my mw appointment at 24 weeks I was 1kg below my booking in weight despite my diet remaining the same and not having any sickness since 15 weeks. My mw said some people really balloon with water weight at first and it them calms down. Don't despair though, I think preganacy is stressful enough without having to over worry about weight gain.

I'm 14 weeks with dc3 and already in maternity jeans Blush with dc1 I was in normal clothes at my 20wrrk scan
I did have a major panic about being huge this morning but then just thought I'd rather be comfortable and make sure I'm being as active as I can - I certainly will be afterwards.
Now is not the time to worry about a few pounds and don't forget it is average weight gain

I've been exactly the same OP-horrid sickness and eating (carbs carbs carbs!) has been the only thing that helps to ease it. I'm 13 weeks now and starting to feel less sick, so hoping I can be a bit more restrained in the next trimester!

If you need to eat so as not to vomit, then you need to do it!

I guess you could try to keep the kitchen free of really bad delicious treats. Then you will be forced to eat something less bad!

I honestly felt like I had no control over my eating at all when pregnant, but over the 9 months it did seem to naturally even itself out. I am glad that it wasn't any longer though, as the last few weeks were definitely the chocolate weeks!

I am 8 weeks and don't dare to weigh myself as for the past three weeks I have been eating non stop. I get so hungry that I feel shaky and sick.
I am hoping that once my nausea wears off I will be able to stop the crazy eating and start regular exercise again.
I am so bloated and uncomfortable in my clothes, I think people are going to guess my secret very soon.

I had a lot of bloating in early pregnancy so that could be contributing too? I know what you mean though, I felt like I was eating constantly just to stop the nausea, I ended up losing though.

Hi - try not to worry about losing the weight at this stage. I have learnt a lot of it (becasue its not fat) drops off. Being left with bettwen 1/2 - 1 stone. At end which then comes off if breast feeding, its your little store for the bubs food.

I have put on a lot although only notices on the scales. I put on 7 pound over my first 2 couple of weeks pregnant. Eat as normally as you can albeit the sickness. I wouldn't try to get into the mindset of dieting, the baby needs all the nutirents it can get.

I was worried for health reasons and whether there was something wrong, Im in my second trimester and way over what they say is 'normal' I was lean, smalll to start with. The smaller you are the greater weight gain it would seem.

I think in total I will put on between 3-4 stone, have a hunch after plasma blood drop etc, I will be 3/4 of stone heavier than at begining of preganancy. Which for me doesnt bother me in the slightest though because If I have a healthy weight baby I will be over the moon. Babies need you to eat protein, breaking down your own muscle in order that the baby receives its protein that way (under eating on protein) is not the same as eating the food yourself, this could change the metabolism and the balance of your babies on system for good. Remember it adapts is body, its blueprint to the world/diet it thinks its growing up into.

Having said that you are early days so don't beat yourself up at this stage if you just cannot eat very much, do whatever you can. The insurance poilicy of a preg multi vit can help to rely your fears a bit too.

To conclude, I haven't over eaten so I have now got accostumed to thinking its obviously what my baby feels it needs to do to survive. For me to put on 0.5 stone straight away, not eatign very much (mornng sickness) must be the name of teh game for me. Opposite to what I was expecting because I was small I thought I would put on very little but its all the blood volume and everything else.

Goodluck

should add I had a normal bmi on low side to start with. If you are overweight professionals may have a different suggestions. Def speak with your midwife to help you with any fears anyway. When I told them about my 2 stone weight gain at 25 wks they didn't even blink. All over the web say Im over though but experienced mumsnetters really put my mind at ease over this. My midwives tried to lighten the mood by saying 'wheres it gone on, you can't tell' saying I didn't look overweight and my starting bmi was good, so 'don't worry'. Really is a case that our bodies adapt very differently.

I do joke calling myself fatty bum bums but I should give myself a break and wouldn't recommend that bit :D
