Is this a normal scan picture?

It was taken last week when I was 12wks + 2. In fairness the sonographer did say it was hard to get a good pic due to baby leaping around so much.

When I look at other baby scan pics I can clearly make out the side profile, nose, legs etc. Mine - the baby just seems to have a very square head and then the rest is a blob with no obvious arms or legs in view Grin I can't fathom what position the baby might be in - does he or she have its back to me do you think?

Am also assuming the thing they've sticking out at the end is maybe a foot rather than the nub?

Is this a normal scan picture?

My son just looked like two baked beans stuck together. I am always amazed st how some mums 12 week scan pics look so clear, with arms, legs, etc!

Your baked bean is reassuring Grin this is my first so have no other scans of my own to compare it to. The ones that I am seeing on MN are v clear with everything where it would be and clearly identifiable rather than a slug with a square head BlushGrin

I think it looks like a penguin resting on a square pillow. Penguins are v cute. Congratulations Grin

They were a bit mean to give you this screenshot as a memory picture. Surely, they checked the nose bone and or nuchal translucency so should have caught a profile at that stage. But anyway... What you see is the baby's back, head on the right (you can see the ear) and leg on the left (it's not a nub, it's the beginning of the leg and the foot is higher up). 11+5 is fine for measurements but a bit early for nub. And it's good to have a wringly baby with a heart beat! Congrats!

Am in N Ireland and the NHS don't do the nose bone test or NT over here unless you pay ££££ to get it done privately. You can make things out a lot clearer than me! Away to squint and see if I can make out an ear too Grin

Thanks for the Congats :)

Though I guess if they don't check for NT here it might explain why my scan pic is a lot less clear than the majority of others that I've seen on MN or elsewhere on Internet!

Oh, NI, sorry... (Roll eyes...)
That's why then.
The ear is the white coma / banana starting at the 10oclock of the little + on the baby's head. The shadow behind the head is an arm or hand. You'll see more next time (ask for a profile pic!)

Remember that what you're seeing is more like a cross-section than a photo - if you can't see arms and legs, it's probably more because you're looking at the wrong depth, if you see what I mean?

a few of my scan pics were like this, but I was 13 weeks. He had his back to us and wouldn't turn around so may just be the same thing? although at one point it did look like he gave us the finger over his shoulder Grin im now 24 weeks!

Congratulations! I think if they thought there was anything wrong with the way the baby was developing they would have mentioned something or asked you to come back for another appointment or maybe even suggested you pay for the other tests.

Mine was a bit pants too. Didn't have any of the proper measurements either because despite trying for 30 minutes, going for a walk and havING a glads of fizzy water the baby just would.not get in the right position... little bugger. I guess we just have to be thankful that there is actually s baby in there.

I'd put money on that being a girl

DontKillMyVibe · 02/02/2016 17:59

I think that's a foot or part of the leg rather than the nub Super so think it's impossible to tell whether it's a girl or boy (though I could be wrong)

I could hardly see the screen when the scan was being taken though I was assured that the baby does have arms and legs! Think I was just that relieved that there was a heartbeat everything else is a bit of a blur. Wish I could do it again - though will just have to wait for 20 week one now Smile

I was basing it on skull shape :)

Report
DontKillMyVibe · 03/02/2016 12:06

Oh, didn't realise that skull shape could be used to predict gender. Skull shape in scan is ridiculously square - is it the more square it is the more likely it is to be a girl or something like that?
