Anyone know what my options are for where to give birth in Glasgow? Is there anywhere with private rooms? Would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for one. Will obviously ask my mw at my booking in appointment next week too xx

Yes for after birth, I don't think there's anywhere in Glasgow that does private births. I had read a few things online about paying for a private room in an nhs hospital or that midwife ran birthing centres have private rooms but that might not be the case.

Edinburgh Murrayfield Hospital does private births, IIRC.

I've never known that to be that case think only way would be if u went private to rosshall/Nuffield but not even sure they do births. With my ds I was in a 4 room but with dd I was in a single room it's just ur luck in busy glasgow hospitals tbh..think I was put in a single room with dd because I had her at 5am X you hopefully won't be in hospital longer than 1 overnight anyways x

Rosshall & Nuffield don't do them Lou. I've been in hospital quite a few times and absolutely hate sharing a room Hmm if there's no choice there's no choice. Wouldn't want to pay for full private birth anyway as that would cost a fortune, rather keep the money for baby :)

Aww really I'm shocked private don't offer that service X

Hopefully u end up in a single room anyways sometimes the company after birth is good tho.

As u said keep ur money xx

Would u consider a home birth? Then u will Defo not have to share a room lol xx

Report
Kaytee1987 · 10/12/2015 19:41

Defo not, it's my first child and my mum ended up with two emergency sections so I would be too worried to have a home birth. Wouldn't want to ruin my sheets either lol x

Havent most maternity services in Glasgow moved to the new Queen Elizabeth hospital? I know the main hospital is ALL private rooms but no idea about maternity but would be surprised if it wasnt the same.

Na maternity is still same building that it always was xx

The maternity at the Southern (or QEH or whatever) is mainly 4 bed wards. There are some individual rooms.

You dont have options in glasgow, or indeed anywhere in Scotland. Whether it's for political or economic reasons (lack of perceived demand perhaps) all maternity natal care is nhs. If you want private, you'll need to go down south (my friend just went to London for a week, came back from a very jolly stay in the Portland with a baby. Thirty grand lighter too I suspect, given she was there under consultant care for a week.)

What you can do however is pay to see an ante natal obstetrician privately in Glasgow, and you can also pay them to oversee your care in the nhs maternity hospital of your choice when it comes to birth. I have heard stories of privately retained consultants being able to "swing it" for their patients to get into one of the very scarce private rooms at the prm or southern, but as these rooms are reserved usually for peope who really need them in the nhs (high risk pregnancies, or ones where the mother has special needs, for example) then no amount of private dollar is going to usurp that need, and if you happen to go into labour at the same time as a lot of mothers who need those rooms, then you will be in a ward regales of what you have paid.

Is there anything in particular worrying you? I was in for 5 days recently with a heart scare (and I am a FTm). I have ocd, a short temper and a general dislike of sharing my space with anybody, but I found it a hugley enriching experience to be around other expectant mums and part of this important stage in their lives. It was a very levelling experience. If you're at all a anxious about sharing a ward, ask for a hospital tour. It's really helped me now that I've seen how it works. If you're worried about sharing your ward with smack heads, don't be. These poor women require, and receive, a very special type of antenatal care in a separate wing of the hospital (partly because off the special needs their babies have). You will be perfectly safe, and very well looked after. Try not to worry. (Or i can get you the number of the consultant at the portland).

City it's more that I really don't like sharing with strangers, don't know what to expect after birth, will be trying to breastfeed and don't want to be discharged before I've got the hang of it and really don't know how long that could take. Definitely wouldn't go fully private anyway as no issues with nhs but just know how miserable it is sharing having been in hospital for up to 5 days with various operations. Maybe I won't mind when the time comes and suppose I don't have a choice :) x

I know the midwife led unit at Paisley is quite small so the chances of sharing would be less.

I didn't love being on a ward first time around but it was ok. Second baby I had a home birth which was fab. And no ruined sheets!
