Can you tell sex of baby at 13 weeks

I had a dating scan today and the baby is all wriggly and delicious. I couldn't see any boy parts so am wondering if it's a girl. I was measuring 13+3 We had very clear views of the bits as she was wriggling about bit was displaying proudly :) I don't mind either way but am already getting excited. Am quite nosy about these things

There are lots of "nub" and "skull" theorists out there who will have a guess, but to be honest scans can be quite unreliable in terms of gender at this stage so don't start buying yet.
That said, I knew I was having a girl as soon as I was pregnant with DD and lots of friends say similar so I put a lot of stock in instincts Wink
Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Not really as external genitalia isn't finished at that point. Only really possible from about 16 weeks. Congratulations btw!

I had a gender scan at 14 weeks and tbh even tho everything was pointed out to me all the parts looked the same (and that was for my 4th pregnancy).

I was also told if you are told it's a girl early on then you should have a 2nd scan a few weeks later to double check nothing has grown

Actually the poster above is right it was at 16weeks for my scan.

Thank you. :) so exciting baby was so active and waving at us during the scan and then rubbing her eyes. I was all awww.

There was no nub to speak of so I am thinking girl

I thought all babies had a nub, it's the angle of it which suggests boy or girl?
16 weeks is generally the earliest they can reliably tell.

I have known woman to be told at 13/14 weeks the sex of baby.
More reliable if it's a boy it seems, but tbh it's 50/50 lol.
Have you got any pics of your scan?

A sonographer is probably able to tell more often than not at 12 weeks (around 60% accuracy), but it gets much easier even just a couple of weeks later.

I got loads of pics. If there was a nub it was tiny Grin

Both boys and girls have s nub at 13wks. It's to do with angle and stuff. If nub is out in a straight line with the spine chances are girl, if pointing upwards at angle of more than 30 degrees I think then chances are boy. There's also a possibility of 'stacking' on the nub at 13wks which would also indicate boy. If you're desperate to know post it on the Ingender forum. Lots of women over there with lots of experience looking at 13wk nub pictures.

My gynae was 70% certain at 13 weeks by nub but I couldn't see what she was on about and this was dc4 so I'd been to lots of scans before. She was right but she was very experienced - looking back at the scans now I still can't see the minute difference

Hmm baby had legs wide open so I was thinking there should be something if it was a boy. But obviously i am no expert. Will wait and see. Might try the forum thanks

There's always a nub on the actual baby (nub doesn't equal boy, it equals genitals of either type at this stage) it's just that you can't always see said nub it in your scan pics. It depends how the baby is lying. If you can't see one at all then there simply isn't any evidence to speculate on, but it's quite common to have a shy baby! There's no visible nub in any of my scan pics either (and all five are different) but I'm definitely not assuming it's a girl on those grounds.

Stick a pic up (if you have one that is of baby on its side) let's have a guess :)

I've known alot of people who, even once told it's a boy/girl, have given birth to the opposite. I had a scan at 19 weeks where I was told I was having a girl, but paid for a private scan just to be sure. The standard NHS scan operators aren't specifically looking for the baby's sex so try not to take their word as 100% accurate. Congratulations though, try not to get your hopes up for one or the other though, a happy, healthy baby is more important than a foo-foo or penis :)

At 11+2 scan our sonographer said 80% sure our baby has a girly nub. Scan at 20 wks confirmed.

I do not know anything scientific about 'nub theory', however, at both my 13 week scans, the sonographer said (when asked) that they thought it was a boy. They caveated it by saying they were 80% sure. They were right both times.

If you have a seriously top consultant do your scan, yes! I was told at two 12 weeks scans the "probability" of the sex. They said they were 1st one 95% sure (boy) second 80% sure (girl).
To be honest, at 12 weeks the boy was pretty obvious to us too 😉
It depends on scanning equipment too, but mostly the expertise of the consultant. I would only trust a specialist consultant.
This was 2006 and 2008 by the way.

I was told a girl at 12 week scan and had it confirmed at the 20 week scan. My sister was also told at her 12 week scan that she would be having a girl and she did.

That scan photo looks like a boy to me.
