Hi all. I have a really badly infected ear (and a sore tooth which only came to light yesterday evening) and I am on amoxicillin for it and I am on day 4 of the course (oh and I'm 36 +2)

last night contained some of the worst pain I have ever experienced and because I was knackered I ended up crying my eyes out... I really felt like if someone were to punch me in the side of the head id feel better as either Id be knocked out or something would happen so that the pain stopped. Luckily noone went foe the offer although I was very tempted to try.

Anyway, when I got in from work at 7:30pm I took 2 paracetamol (didn't work), went to bed around 8 with a tea towel full of broccoli strapped to the side of my head (again did nothing but make my face very very cold) so at 10pm I had another paracetamol (just the 1 as apparently it was the last 1 that we had in the house)... We get to midnight where the pain was legitimately unbearable. Crying, screaming, effing and blinding... My poor neighbours must have thought j was in labour. Because we had no paracetamol (we had ibuprofen and codeine but I cant take either) we had to call my mother to bring some at about 12:30. I took two and immediately fell asleep. I have woken in pain today although I am a little worried about the amount I have taken (I just don't take drugs unless I really really really have to)... So have I overdone it. Baby is wriggling around as normal but still

2 x paracetamol at 7:30pm
1 x """"""""""""""" at 10pm
2 x """"""""""""""" at 12:30am

Well normally you would take two every four hours, do you've only really taken one extra, which shouldn't be an issue.

You had one tablet too many. It's not affecting baby that would really be a concern but it's more affecting your liver. However as a one off, one extra tablet is very, very unlikely to affect your liver. But please don't do it again. People do die from accidental overdoses.

Why can't you take the codine?

Is the pain better now?

You'll be fine.

Personally I would have taken the codeine. Keep banging on with those antibiotics. Are they 500mg?

Thanks x Yeah the paracetamol are 500mg. I cant have codeine (on drs advice) as it gives me heart palpitations which are just scary, thought I was having a heart attack the last time I had them. I'm going to try (with the exception of my antibiotics) to have a drug free day today but I really doubt its going to last....

I wouldn't worry about it. No one would be concerned about that (medics I mean). You can take 8 in 24 hours, you just got them a little close together. I'm sure my midwife said something about paracetamol being safe in pregnancy as it doesn't cross the placenta, although I'm not sure of this! But seriously don't worry and take yourself to the gp asap! Sounds like you're in way too much pain.

If you are in pain don't try and go without painkillers, take the recommended amount at the right time and you can take ibuprofen with paracetamol but you alternate? Check with midwife but it is better to take the painkillers and try and keep the pain at a manageable level.

Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon.

Ear infections can develop into more serious issues so if the pain is that bad you should definitely get back to the doctors or A&E.

Hope all gets better soon x

You shouldn't take inuprofen in pregnancy as far as I'm aware.

I had to take paracetamol a little bit earlier. I wouldn't take ibuprofen x believe me if it gets as bad as it did last night I will be going straight to a&e x

You should be spacing them 4-6 hourly with no more than 8 tablets in 24 hours. You took one tablet too early. If you take them too close together you'll run out of doses, if that makes sense.
