MNers, I'm hoping you can help me feel calmer...
I'm off to the hospital in a few hours for induction at 40+9 and feeling really quite stressed and emotional about it.
I was very anxious about giving birth up until a couple of months ago but have been doing lots of relaxation practice, read a really good hypnobirthing book and have been practicing my breathing/ visualisations and feeling properly 'bring it on!' about the whole thing as I approached my due date... then nothing happened!!
I had imagined doing the first stage of labour at home surrounded by all my things and wasn't scared of it and now I'm going in to hospital at 5pm and having the prostaglandin gel, staying overnight, having the hormone drip in the morning and then labouring tomorrow. I think its because it has all become so medical before I've even started that I'm losing sight of the comforting things I have been telling myself about how this is a natural process my body knows how to do! I have had no signs of pre labour at all, not a single BH, cervix is shut tight apparently.
I think the thought of spending the night on the labour ward on my own with my own thoughts makes it worse :(
I know this all sounds pathetic, but does anyone have any similar stories of induction that have gone well?? Do you think it is still at all possible for the hypnobirthing techniques I've been using to get me through? The midwife did warn me to think about pain relief options before time because the induced contractions will come faster and harder from the outset and it may well be more painful. The obstetrician said that they could give me something to 'temper' the contractions if I couldn't cope but I wonder if this will just cause a domino effect of drugs and intervention?
One last random question - do they use a speculum to put the prostaglandin gel onto your cervix or just a finger and how fast does this usually take effect?
Excuse the fretful rambling. On the plus side I know I am so close to seeing my baby's face and I can't wait to get this over with and finally meet her. Just got to get my game face back on before I leave for the hospital!
