basic biology question! sweeps/plug

I thought I was paying attention to the technical bit at nct but clearly not....

wk 39 and although I've had crampy pains and lots of BH in the last week I didn't think I'd lost my plug. At the hospital today the Dr said my cervix was favourable and open enough to do a sweep which he did.

So if my cervix is already open does that mean I've lost my plug and I just didn't notice? Hmm

nb for anyone worrying about sweeps I really didn't think it was that bad at all. No worse than a smear. Poor DH was more uncomfortable than me Grin not that he was watching but he could obviously hear through the curtain and he has a fertile and squeamish imagination!

Hi Runnerd - not necessarily - I had a sweep and lost most of my plug after, also bits of the plug can come away, it doesn't necessarily all come away at the same time. Anyway - good luck and hope the sweep works for you - I had one about 39+5 and had DD a couple of days later, I'm sure it started things along!

I have this question too! I have a sweep at 41 weeks tomorrow but had a check myself last night and my cervix feels soft and open...I could be wrong but im pretty familiar with what it feels like. Glad it didn't hurt you I'm scared!

I had a sweep at 39 weeks and found a 10p sized bloody blob (tmi sorry!) in my pants a few hours later. I thought that was it, but I lost small bits over the next few days and the morning I went into labour there was lots more- not bloody this time but around the size of my palm. It doesn't necessarily mean you've lost it (although you may have without realising) but it sounds like your body is ready to go. Best of luck!

Thanks, sounds like that delight might still be to come then!

I lost my plug with DD (or at very least the vast majority of it) after id had my stretch and sweep. I agree it isn't the worst - I abhor VE's - normally have to suck in the gas and air as soon as they get the gloves on haha- good luck and i hope it gets you going soon xx
