Inductions! What to expect??

I'm being induced in four days time as baby hasn't seemed to grow (I'll be 40+1) and the doctors didn't want me to go any further over my due date. I've not really been told what will happen. So what should I expect? Also can I get away with not having a stretch and sweep?

A sweep won't guarantee a baby being born. I've had several unsuccessful ones over my pregnancies.

An induction, although it can be lengthy, will mean your baby is born one way or another.

I was induced with my third. Admitted early morning, monitored for a bit then given a pessary into my vagina to kick things off. Another hour of monitoring. The first one gave me a few twinges but nothing more. The second pessary, 5/6 hours later did the job. After that it all went very quickly. The pain is a different pain to naturally progressing labour. It's forced on so can be a bit full on but it's not the same for everyone. After establishing proper labour, my daughter was born in 3 hours with a bit of gas and air.

Good luck.

Sorry I completely mis-read the bit about the sweep. I couldn't avoid a hand up my nethers because I was given the pessary. They kind of do a bit of a stretch while inserting the gel. Some women have the syntocin drip but I've got no experience of that.

I was induced with my first and will be for my 2nd too. I went in at 2pm and they checked that me and baby were ok (Doppler/BP/temp etc). I was then given the pessary and told to 'be active' for the next few hours. Spent ages walking around the hospital/bouncing on the ball etc. DH went home at 7pm and I was left watching DVDs (took laptop). At about 11pm I was in a lot of pain as DS had gone back to back (not in labour). Tried a bath but in end had pethidine as couldn't sleep due to the constant pain. At 3am I had a massive contraction and my waters broke naturally. Labour then ramped up quite quickly. I managed by myself until 7am when DH came in. At noon I went to the birthing suite and they said I hadn't progressed as much as I should have (6 cms) so they said I needed to go on the drip to speed up labour. I had heard from friends that it makes things v painful so I insisted on an epidural before which they didn't argue against! From then I was much calmer but DS was still not in a great position so nor descending and starting to get distressed. I was also knackered as had been pushing for 2.5 hours. Ended up in theatre with forceps and he was born at 22:50.

All I would say is take some entertainment in case the induction takes awhile and if they mention the dreaded drip have an epidural!! It really intensifies and speeds up labour that your body doesn't have a chance to react and cope.

Ps I had a sweep the day before which was incredible painful but I was only 39 weeks and my Bishop Score suggested my body wasn't even close to going into labour naturally! Im going to refuse one this time around!

I have induction booked tomorrow at 10am (if i make it!) been off and on today with pains and went to get checked out this morning, had 2 internals, ouchy - back home now and keep getting irregular sometimes very painful contractions - am only 1cm dilated this is baby 4 and i am 12 days over!!!

They said they will admit me on a ward and give me the gel till am ready to have waters popped. I am dreading it and hoping i will go naturally enough myself. I have tried to rest today and had a 2 hr sleep, been up since 2am broken sleep in lots of pain!

just wish it would hurry and start.

Its my daughters 10th birthday today too !!

Fingers crossed for a baby in the morning lol

I was induced at 41 weeks. I was 3cm dilated so they tried giving me a sweep hoping it will start labour naturally, unfortunately it didn't work and 24 hours later they broke my waters and put me on the drip. 5.5h later DD was born. I have no idea what the pain is like when you go into labour naturally but mine was manageable and I only had gas&air. Can only hope that this time round (33weeks with DC2) my labour will be just as easy.
