Predicting gender by fetal heart rate

Just a bit of fun I guess but was at my midwife appointment today and we got to speaking about this old wives tale. Apparently if the heart rate is over 140 and sounds like a galloping horse when listened to on a Doppler it's a girl - if heart rate is below 140 and sounds like a train chugging along it's a boy.

Babies heart rate today was 128bpm and sounded more like a train so going by that theory it's a boy.

Anyone else rightly or wrongly predicted the gender based on heart rate and sound coming through the Doppler?

I'm having a boy his heart rate is usually around 140-150

This little boy has a heart rate around 145-155. I suppose there's a 50/50 chance of the HB theory being correct so you never know! Smile

My little girl tends to be around the 140-150 mark :)

Can't remember her heart rate, but dd really did sound like a galloping horse!

DD consistently had a slower heart rate than DS so they were the wrong way round. As DS weighed 1.5 lb less than DD I do wonder if that had anything to do with it (ie a mouses heartbeat is faster then an elephants)

The theory has worked for me. DD had consistently 140+ heartbeat that was distinctly horse like. This time heartbeat is noticeably slower (even DH commented) and sounds very different - just found out at scan this morning that is a wee boy!

Thanks for the comments and interesting anythingbut and congrats! Will update after our gender scan to see if it's true for us or not Smile

When I was pregnant with DD the midwives always said... 'This one's a girl, it's heart sounds like a horse'. I'm 11 weeks pregnant with DC2 now and went for an early scan at 9 weeks. The woman doing the scan said 'ooh, nice galloping heartbeat' so I'm already convinced it's another girl! Of course I know it's absolute rubbish really and I have a 50% chance of being right Wink

Im interested in this one!! I am 38 weeks and was told at the 12 wk scan nub theory suggested girl and 20 wk scan confirmed girl. My m/w today threw a spanner in the works by saying the heartbeat sounded very like a boy, 130bpm. She said not to rely on the scan. If Im having a boy, he's going to be wearing a lot of dresses (not that I am bothered either way so long as s/he is happy and healthy!)

Both mine have had high heartbeats. The 1st dc was a girl and this one is a boy. Sounds the same on a doppler too.

The MW said the heartbeat "sounded like a boy" but not to rely on the 20w scan? Hmm I'd go with the scan myself!!

We didn't want to know the sex and refused all offers of telling us so imagine how pleased I was when the midwife who was inducing me at 42+2 said "it's a boy" based on the heartbeat (and not in an "I'm guessing" way but in a "this is a fact" way.

Anyway it was a girl....

It has been debunked in studies. It's just an old wives tail/bit of fun. Smile

My newborn DD sounded like a train to me and while being monitored on ctg her heart rate fluctuated from 100 -180 so i wouldn't rely on that...

At my 16 week appointment heart rate was 145, I'm having a boy.

I can't remember the heart rates but my son sounded like a train. At my 16 week appointment with my daughter her heartbeat sounded like a horse running :)

I said I would update after my gender scan and it's a girl so blows that theory out of the water Smile

A friend of mine was pregnant with non-identical twins, she chose not to find out the gender on the scans so didn't know for sure until the babies were born.

Throughout the pregnancy on the Doppler scans, one twin had a high heart rate and one had a low heart rate. She said that she was convinced that the twins would be a boy and a girl because she'd heard this theory too.

Both twins were girls. So not a good predictor in her case.

worked with us - heart rate all the way through sounded like a train and out popped DS!
