Bleeding at 8 weeks - has this happened to you?

I'm 8 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Very early into the pregnancy (around 2-3 weeks), I kept bleeding after sex. I didn't know at this point I was pregnant. I went to the doctors and she said everything looked normal and it could be because my body was still getting used to not being on the pill. At 5 weeks I found out I was pregnant with my first child.

Last Sunday (7 weeks and 2 days) I have sex and again bled afterwards. The next day I had a brown discharge and had this everyday but it seemed to be easing off each day.

Yesterday late afternoon/early evening, I started to feel as though I was going to come on, that's the sensation I felt. I went to the toilet and had bled again but proper blood, not just a discharge. It wasn't really heavy but I went to the toilet again half an hour later to check and I had lost a little bit more, I even had a couple of drips of blood in the toilet. I rang the hospital and spoke to a doctor on the gynaecology ward. She said if the blood filled 2 sanitary towels and the pain was worse than a period pain, then I should come into A&E. I didn't really lose any blood after that, again it just became a discharge and I still have that today. It's a dark brown colour. I'm so scared with it being my first...I don't have a clue what is and isn't normal!

Has anyone else experienced this? I am waiting for my scan appointment but was told from the midwife that it could be anywhere between 12-14 weeks which is 4-6 weeks away!

Yes, I had exactly what you're describing - regular small amounts of bleeding during/after sex when pregnant.

The likely cause I think (for me at least) is a cervical erosion. This is when you have a small amount of more delicate tissue on your cervix, and when this gets knocked (like during sex) it bleeds. Then the bleeding stops but you get a bit of brown discharge as the bleeding dries up. For me it happened from about week 8 to week 17 and then stopped.

Cervical "erosion" is a misleading name, it doesn't mean your cervix is eroding! It just means a patch of the cervical tissue becomes more delicate.

Women are more likely to get a cervical erosion when they are pregnant due to the hormone changes, or a pre existing cervical erosion may get bigger/more sensitive.

I went for an early pregnancy scan every time I bled - all was fine. Do you have a hospital nearby with an early pregnancy unit? If so they will scan you if you have had a bleed. Should give you some reassurance that all is well hopefully.

Yes, happened to me with both pregnancies, I was diagnosed with erosion of the cervix which does not effect the baby, I went back and forth to hospital several times, bled on and off throughout both pregnancies, was given scans ( baby was fine ) and eventually a internal examination which then showed erosion. Both babies were born at full term and very healthy.

Always worth getting checked out with a bleed though xxxx

Firstly, breathe!

I am now 19 + 1 with my first and I still 'bleed' fairly heavily after sex and have done since the beginning. The dark/browny discharge is not a fresh bleed; if this is what you get after sex (like me), then it's highly likely to be cervical erosion. Not pleasant, but quite normal, more so for women who have been or are on the Pill due to hormones changing the way your cervical cells 'change'.

Brighter, 'red' blood indicates a fresh bleed, but I was given the same advice as you - some cramping and blood is quite normal for a lot of women, so don't panic! Everyone is different and some women have no pain/bleeding at all, others have it all the way through the pg. Chances are, if the bleeding has already stopped, it was nothing to worry about.

However, if you're very anxious, check out your local EPU. It might be that you can self-refer for an early pregnancy scan for reassurance. Failing that, call the MW again and explain that you are extremely anxious and you really feel like you need an early scan for reassurance.

Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy! Thanks

Get in touch with your GP ASAP and request referral to EPU for a scan. Coulda, woulda, shoulda isn't going to do you any favours- get it checked out. It's a substantial bleed, and could be anything.
Please remember - every woman and pregnancy is different

Best of luck, and good health to you & the baby!

Thank you all for your comments. I have been to the EPU tonight. Unfortunately they couldn't scan me tonight but have booked me in for a scan on Friday. Feel a lot better after speaking to the doctor who tried to reassure me that it was probably nothing to worry about. Thanks again!

i had bleeding between 6-8 weeks with each of my pregnancies. with my last one it went on for a while and was bright red.
I've been scanned during 2 pregnancies and both times they could find no reason for the bleeding

have 4 healthy boys now :-D

Yep had bleeding at 7 weeks and went for an early scan where they told me baby was fine, 35 weeks later (2 weeks late Hmm) baby nugget was born Smile. So it's. not always bad news but I would get checked just for peace of mind plus its always nice to see them even if they're just a little blob. Good luck for Friday, hopefully everything will be fine Cake

I had a bleed at what turned out to be 6 weeks. Had an early scan at what we thought was 7+2 (turned out to be 8+4) and had some more spotting a few weeks later. Currently 33 weeks (and counting!) with our LO with no problems.

I went for an early scan but was bad news unfortunately. They could see the sack but only something very slight in there. They said at 9 weeks they should be able to see the baby and hear a heart beat. They said I've either got my dates wrong (which I really don't think I have) or I'm having a silent miscarriage (silent because I've not been in any pain). They did say there was a lot of blood. I have to go back a week tomorrow to have another scan to confirm the result but I just know it's a miscarriage. I'm gutted!
