nipple piercings?

I have one nipple pierced (it's been done 10+ years and never caused any issues)

However I now pregnant with my first child. I'm assuming breast feeding with a ring in is impossible. Are there any other issues?

Don't mind if I need to get rid but could it heal badly and cause complications??

Any experience anyone??

this might be tmi - I had a nipple piercing for 8 or so years, took it out approx. 8 years ago and I can still squeeze it like a spot every so often. Blush I've had no problems removing any of my other piercings as I'm a 'healer' (these included ear expanders (I could fit a cigarette in my ear), septum, navel and neck)
When I took it out I cleaned it often for a while with a saline solution which helped it heal but appears to have made no difference in the long term.
So I recon, if your intending to breast feed, you should prob get it out as soon as and get cleaning - if your like me you might able to pop it back in once you have finished breast feeding. I guess the nipple isn't meant to heal?
Please post what you decide to do - and if you decide to keep it I'd love to know how you get on when the time comes?

Needs more research methinks.

I assumed it probably wouldn't heal like other piercings. Don't want it to mean I can't breastfeed successfully though

I had one for years, took it out when pregnant with ds 7 years ago and it definitely healed inside, it must have as milk never came out of the sides Grin. Bf dd1 and dd2 for 19 months each, ds was a disaster but in hindsight that was a him/me combination and nothing to do with the piercing at all.

Hi Crayola,

I'm a lactation consultant and I just listened to an hour's lecture by Robyn Roche Paull on this very subject. Ideally take your piercings out in pregnancy. Sometimes there are complications with damage to milk ducts so you need to monitor things carefully once baby is born. If you DM me, I can send you some additional stuff.

I took my nipple piercing out when pregnant and fed DD for 2.5 years! The side where I'd had the piercing was the side DD preferred!

Thanks ladies. Will take it out (as soon as I find the pliers!) Will need look at best ways of healing it

tambajam I'm guessing DM means direct message, which I will try and work out how to do!
