How soon did you tell people you were pg?

We told our family and friends a lot sooner with no 1 but with no 2 I'm keen to hold off. DH has already caved and told his best mate

It depends on the friends etc. there are some people whose support I would have needed if things had gone wrong so I told them almost as soon as I knew. Acquaintances etc I left longer - one neighbour didn't notice until march and the baby was born in may!!!

Didn't tell even family members until week 16 and acquaintances 22 weeks although am sure people had started guessing by then.

I told close family as soon as I knew and work people after my dating scan - with dd it was around 12 weeks and with this one it was around 10 weeks as I was less far on than I thought.

soon after a scan at 6wks where we saw a heartbeat. had prev lost 3 pgs so people were pretty much well aware we were trying and were picking up on clues left right and centre.

We told parents as soon as we knew - at about 5.5 weeks. BIL and MIL had already guessed the weekend before anyway as I was being really sick. I had lost a baby previosuly (not told anyone beforehand) and didn't want the same situation. So we also told our closest friends around 7 weeks or so, when they came to visit all together.

unfortunately both times I have been quite ill with morning sickness and so it was not easy to keep the secret. We told family and very close friends for dd1 - at about 8/9 weeks. Dd2 - about the same. They were very very close friends that were told that early - most around the 12/13 weeks after the first scan.

I told one close friend who lived near me at about 6 weeks, as dh was going away with work for a month and I wanted someone to know incase I had problems. We told family after the 12 week scan, and I told work when I was about 14 weeks.

I'm 6 wks and my ds knows, my mum knows and my 2best friends
We have all been ttc for a long time and talk about nothing else, one has just had twins thru IVF and the other has had a miscarriage so we all relay all details asap.
But am holding off telling PIL til at last 8 wks, due to previous miscarriages
Am having early scan next week to check its in teh right place and heartbeat etc
I might relent then esp if I get hyperemesis again I may not have much choice...

Oh piff. I have everything, even my toes crossed for you.

I had a late-ish miscarriage before dd, so didn't tell anyone till about 14 weeks. then with ds it was 12 weeks or so and with parasite 3 about 8 weeks? I suspect lots of other things - sterilising, putting in cot etc will follow that pattern.

congratulations, piffle! i hope it goes well.

gingerbear thank you - I am really hoping this one is it, finally
Same goes for you

I always blurt it out immediately. I just can't keep it to myself. I'm not supersticious. I've had two miscarriages and, though it was really hard having to tell everyone we'd lost the baby, people were nice and caring so it was fine.

piffle - have only just put two and two together...

best of luck with the scan - did you get a nice strong +ive when you tested?

Report
hotmama · 27/07/2006 20:40

Firstly, congrats piffle.

I told immediate family straight away - as I knew I wouldn't be able to keep quiet.

As I am 'an older mother" I had a CVS with both dd's so didn't tell the rest of the world until after 12 weeks when I had the results - thankfully fine!

We got married in South Africa on April 6th, got pregnant almost straight away, and announced it to everybody at our UK reception on April 29th. All close family members knew the same day we did the test. I understand not everyone conceives that easily and I understand waiting till 12 weeks, personally we were just so excited and so positive everything would be alright. I was quite surprised at the 12 week trend, but then again I think a lot more people miscarry than we are necessarily aware of, hence the caution.

mum2oliver · 27/07/2006 22:08

Im holding off because I dont feel that its advisable to get excited with everyone until I know its more safe, after my scan and Iv heard the heart beat.

We told our parents straight away and then very quickly ended up telling our friends as one of dp's friends guessed and then we just couldn't keep the secret. Our friends knew that we were trying although our family didn't so I think that they were a bit surprised. I told work colleagues and acquaintances after the 12 week scan. I took the view that if something did go wrong I would have hated to have told my mum that I'd had a miscarriage without ever having told her that I was pregnant.
