hi all
i found out i was pregnant at start of january and made an appt to see a gp at my surgery (you are assigned to a practice but not a gp, but you can request to see gp of your choice) im not 100% on dates of last period etc as dont keep track of those things lol, but at that time i would have been around 6 weeks according to due date calulators. i am now around 12 weeks and still waiting for scan appointment.
when i was in with gp i was given choice of 2 hospitals in my area (belfast) and i advised gp that i may well be moving to be with dp so would need to come back to her on that. i was in the following week and left word at reception as to which hospital i preferred.
2 weeks after that i was back in with gp due to severe sickness and asked if i had been referred, gp looked at my notes and could see it had not been done!?! and told me she would get me referred.
now im at 12 week point and still not heard anything, is this the norm?? do i need to chase it up with gp or can i self refer??
its just that im anxious to have scan and know that everything so far is ok with baby so that i and dp can start planning etc.

sorry for the long post btw!!

thanks

Have you had a booking in appointment with the midwife?

Chase it up although most hospitals lett yuo self refer too so do what will be quicker. My doctor forgot to send my referral to the hospital twice, really frustrating. I think I was nearly 14 weeks be the time I was booked in and had my scan.

I don't blame you! Contact the GP again and ask about the booking appointment - that's usually done before the scan and it's not normally at the hospital (although it could be different in your area - some community MWs do work out of hospitals). You might be able to get a direct number to contact the MW yourself which is your best bet. I'm on my second pregnancy and I didn't even bother with the GP this time as they're clueless in my experience. I just went straight to the MW (she's based in the local children's centre where I often take DS to play) and she sorted everything out for me.

In pregnancy no1 the gp referred me to midwives and this time I called midwives myself to register literally today. You should have received an appointment in the post and pretty sure you should have had your blood tests by now too for sickle cell anaemia etc. I could be wrong. I would get on to someone pretty quick so you can get your scan done! x

hmmm, think i shall give the maternity unit a ring, no harm in doing that, even if its just to get the ball rolling. the hospital i want is the only one with a midwife led unit with 'home from home' birthing centre which apparently is lovely with really nice rooms with birthing pools in them, which is another reason im anxious to get booked in!

Hi, you need to get an appointment with the midwife. Also, don't panic about getting into the birthing centre! They won't book you in to that until near the end as you have to meet certain criteria and it's too early to say if you will or not.

Scarlett's right - the issue of which hospital you're going to doesn't come up until right near the end of your pregnancy so you don't have to worry about that. They might ask your preference at the start but where you end up totally depends on how your pregnancy goes and how busy the units are on the day.

I'm from the area and it is slightly different here compared to England. Your booking appt and scan will be on the same visit usually around 10 weeks. I'm going to the hosp you describe and got an appt within a week of them getting my GP referral and they're fairly up to date. You need to ensure GP referral has been sent and if so contact the unit directly as they'll see you asap if you're already 12 weeks. Hope this helps x

think i shall be giving the mat unit a wee call in the morn to see whats what then.
