Feeling slightly worried about MWs comments

I had my 28 week appointment on Thursday.

I am measuring 30cm and the baby is transverse. Both I thought weren't too bad as things could change by next appointment.

But the MW said that it would likely mean going to see a consultant and extra scans. Also a probable hospital birth.

This is DC3 and DS2 was 10lb 5oz born at home so the larger baby isn't bothering me too much.

It's the fact the MW didn't think there was much chance of the baby moving in the next 12 weeks so will be a CS.

Can anyone help me calm slightly about measuring bigger and the baby's position please?

I'm a novice (pregnant now with first), but 28 weeks seems far too early to worry about such things! I understand later babies engage further along, and even for me with my first no one batted an eyelid at her being transverse at 36 weeks! She didn't go head down until 38 weeks.

Also, I've heard the measurements are only a guideline, and don't necessarily correlate with birth weight, especially a few cm (they can't even get accurate birthweight with a scan, how could they possibly do it with one stretch if a tape measure?).

I was transverse at 35 weeks, had extra monitoring and talk of an elective C-section because apparently going into labour would be dangerous while baby was this way round.

Baby turned at 36 weeks, scan to make sure, job done!

There's plenty of time, and the more people I told, the more people I realised had had the exact same experience.

Good luck!

I don't think she's transverse now actually. All the movements are on my right side and it feels like she has her feet on my pelvis and her hands pushing on my ribs.

Hi Kayzr

Can't help re baby being transverse I'm afraid, but size-wise, I had a scan at 26 weeks and baby was dot on average (having extra scans 'cause I'm fat) - midwife measured me at 28 weeks and I was measuring 30. She didn't seem in the least bothered to be honest and said that scans are much more reliable.

Wouldn't worry about it yet to be honest - plenty of time for baby to decide to be small, medium or large!

Did the midwife say why she thought there wasn't much chance of the baby turning in the next 12 weeks?

My baby (currently 34 weeks) was transverse at MW appt at 28 weeks, and at GP appt at 31 weeks was still transverse. The GP made me come for an extra appt to see if baby had turned at 33 weeks...and it had! It's now head down (although back to back still so I need to jiggle it round a bit!) So it is possible!

(I've just seen your next post about thinking she isn't transverse anymore - that's good!)

Seriously, I wonder if I am measuring bigger because I am overweight. I was about 14 and a half stone when I got pregnant and carried most weight around my waist.

MW didn't say why baby might not move but did say it would mean a scan to check presentation if she hasn't moved.

As I understand, babies often turn at 32-36 weeks, perhaps she was being cautious? Also have you looked at www.spinningbabies.com/

I really can't understand why she doesn't think your baby has a chance of turning in the next three months??

Absolute nonsense Angry. Plenty of time for baby to move and even if not you should be offered ECV closer to time.

Don't let it worry you and try and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy - you have a lot of time and options yet before needing to consider surgery. Best of luck !

My baby was transverse at my 28 week appointment, had my 31 week yesterday and it is now breech! Midwife said it will probably turn but if still breech at 34 weeks I would have scans etc. She also recommended going up and down stairs sideways (sounds a bit dangerous to me!) or sitting and rocking on a stability ball to help to persuade it to turn! She did also say that if you were breech yourself there's a higher chance your baby will be too, but I don't know how scientific that is! I'm not going to worry just yet, am sure there's plenty of time.

I agree with bearhugs - complete nonsense. I had my 34 wk MW check this week and she thinks DC is transverse. She said not to worry as babies can turn easily for weeks yet. I'm booked for a scan at 36wks to check but there are plenty of options & chances before CS, that wouldn't scan before then as too early.
As for growth I was told that it's fine measuring +/-2 wks either way. Normally I've measured about 1 wk ahead, but this week one under.
I've also been on the spinning babies website & my birth ball early, yet to try inversion, think I might wait 'til absolutely necessary for that.
