I have an appointment for a test. I am dreading finding out. What does this mean for my home birth? I am 25 weeks. First baby.

My consultant had one in her forties (first birth, gestational diabetic). She's written a book The Heart in the Womb if you want to read more. She attended my son's birth (as she happened to be on duty) and was wonderful, when everything around me was going mental (I ended up with a crash section). I specifically requested to be under her care this time and am glad I did as she's inspirational.

The Home Birth site also has info on diabetes: see here

I had to have a GTT as my baby is measuring off the charts but was negative. Don't beat yourself up about what you've done/not done at this stage, as it's better to find out if you have it (so it can be managed properly). You've not done anything "wrong" or anything!

I wanted a home birth with my first baby - had hired an amazing birth pool and all - but ended up induced at 42 weeks and my boy arrived via crash section. But, while I would have loved a home birth, or even a normal, mobile, vaginal birth in the labour ward, I'm just glad he arrived safely. My homebirth NHS midwife always reminded me that the best thing to do is keep an open mind - where and how you deliver is less important than having a safe baby and safe mum (though I'd add to that so long as you feel in control and understand what's happening and why).

Good luck!

Dont panic yet, you havent even had the test!
Very unlikely you'll have it. If you do have it you'll get lots of tlc to manage it well and keep you both in good health. You'll be advised to have baby in hospital, as much as the risks are minimised by good care they are still relevant and hospital would be a much safer choice. However, if all goes well and baby has no problems post birth (such as low blood sugars etc) you will prob be home in a day or two.
Positive thoughts!

Thank you both for your reassurance. Much appreciated! I guess I'll take it as it comes. No point in worrying over the weekend!
