concerned following 12 week scan

After a bit of reassurance really and wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Yesterday I went for my eagerly awaited 12 week scan, I was very relieved to see the baby and it's heartbeat but the sonographer was unable to get the measurements for the downs screening. I wasn't overly concerned about that but the baby was hardly moving at all, she tried an internal scan explaining that I have a retroverted womb but was unable to get any measurements that way either. She asked me to go for walk and when I returned she tried again but the baby still hadn't moved! I saw it twitch a tiny bit but that was it! I've looked in my notes and she was unable to check any of the organs or anything, just the measurement from crown to rump and confirmation of a heartbeat. I just don't feel reassured at all. Is it normal for the baby to be so still? Is it normal for the. Sonographer to be unable to do any checks? Thanks, lotte.

Babies are all different. Mine was a real jack-in-the-box and my friend's spent most of the 9 months very quiet. Have they called you back for another scan? A heartbeat at this stage is good. Your baby may have been asleep - they do sleep a lot in the womb as they have a lot of growing to do.

I had my 12wk scan last wk and whilst baby was very active this also meant that the sonographer was unable to obtain the measurements for NT screening. I am not concerned, the 12wk was previously just a dating scan until the relatively new NT test arrived (DC 10 & 8 they were screened at 16wk blood test). I'm sure your baby was just resting (you may be thankful for a lazy baby come July) If there were concerns they would have raised them with you there and then. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy.

My baby was extremely active but she couldn't do my measurements, i was nearly hanging off the bed she tipped it that much to get bubba in the right position!

I had my downs test by bloods at 17 weeks and was reassured that this is just as accurate as the measurements!

Not sure about the little movements tho, i'm sure she would have told you of any concerns x

I was worried as my baby only twitched twice in my 12 week scan, although he was in the right place to get the measurements but that was just lucky. I was concerned that there was something wrong, but I had my 20 week scan last week and he is very active now! Also, they only checked heartbeat and crown to rump measurement at 12 weeks for me, and we saw his hands and feet, they check organs and spine etc at 20 weeks, although I think they should word the scan reports better as it does often sound like there was lots they wanted to check and couldn't, whereas actually they just can't check it at 12 weeks as they can't see it all yet. At 20 weeks they were very thorough and checked brain, spine, kidneys, stomach, hands and feet, arms and legs and the heart. I hope that puts your mind at rest a bit x

Thanks that does put my mind at ease. Haven't been able to stop worrying until now! Roll on 20 week scan!

I don't think they did the NT test at my dating scan (dated at 11+1) - don't know if that was down to the age or little somersaulting Shrimp who took ages to be found! Also at my 16wk check up after they took the blood test for Downs, it took about 5 minutes for the midwife to find the heartbeat with the Doppler because Shrimp was moving around so much again. I think I'm expecting a wannabe world hide & seek champion...

I have a tilted uterus too and at the 12 week scan I was sent off to eat & drink chocolate to try and get the baby moving, it worked for me. It is harder to scan in the earlier stages but it will be fine and should right itself by the 20 wk scan. I know people that paid privately for a scan at 16wks which you might want to consider. Try not to worry.

My baby was really still during the 12 week scan and afterwards I heard other people talking about theirs turning somersaults etc, so was a bit worried. I'm now 28 weeks and it spends most of its time dancing & leaping about to the point where it's become a bit of a joke. I'm sure yours is doing fine. X
