Vitamin B12 deficiency in late pregnancy

Hi there,

I'm just new to Mumsnet but would be really grateful for any advice. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and 4 weeks ago was told i was anaemic, iron and B12 deficient. I still feel terrible even though I have been taking iron for 4 weeks. I have yet to find a solution to the B12 issue as no one seems to kwno waht the correct levels are in pregnancy and what the suitable treatment is. did anyone else suffer this? My Dr prescribed B12 injections but on reading the leaflet with the injections it said not for treatment of anaemia in pregnancy and the DR on call forbade me taking it on Friday. I now don't know what to do but feel rubbish and still have 3weeks full time to work. Has anyone else a similar problem or can give any advice?

thanks

I suggest you ask for an urgent haematologist referral
They need to find out why your b12 is low

The injections are safe for pg women so I don't know why the doc didnt let you have them

Thanks, I'm really stuck on what to do. Will mention a referral to my Dr today and see what she says. I have read that other pg women take these injections but the packaging of this particular injection said not for pregnant women.

I already had B12 anaemia before falling pregnant and I've been having my 8 weekly B12 injections throughout my pregnancy (currently 37+4) no problem. I totally sympathise with you - it's a horrible condition when untreated. I don't know what the correct levels are but if the B12 anaemia is not diet related then the only treatment are injections usually given at 3 monthly intervals which then make your levels ridiculously high all the time. Best of luck hope you get it sorted soon.
