Sufferers of Obstetric Cholestasis - what are the chances this time round?

I had OC with my first pregnancy, do you think it's likely I'll suffer from it again?

It was so horrible, I clearly remember my husband rubbing a scouring pad over my feet and legs and the itch just not going away :(

I was in hospital every week being monitored and prodded, I hope I don't have to go through all that again. I was induced at 38 weeks in the end, and hemorrhaged after birth which the midwife also said was part of the OC condition.

I had a blood test on Friday to check my liver function, should get the results on Tuesday.

Anyone pregnant and not suffering this time round?

Hi nobbynoob, I suffered from OC in my first pregnancy and it was horrid, was also closely monitored and regularly scratched myself till I bled. Not fun. I think I read that there is a 60% chance of getting it in subsequent pregnancies. I'm now 19 weeks pregnant with DC2 and nervously await any sign or tickle! Hope your tests come back clear, good luck!

Hi, I had it too in my first pregnancy but it didnt get diagnosed till I was almost 39 weeks and they induced me the next day which thankfully was straightforward. It' s really horrible and I remember scratching my back raw with a screwdriver! I'm now almost 28 weeks and am a tiny bit itchy but I think it's just normal. The problem is when I think about it I itch so I think it's more psychological!

The chance of getting it again differs depending on what you read - I've been told somewhere between 60 - 90% and my midwife told me it was pretty likely I'd get it again. They said they'd monitor me from 36 weeks but to say immediately if I get really itchy before then.

Fingers crossed none of us get it this time around!

Aw, I really hope none of us do. It's so nasty.

Thanks for the replies, nice to know I'm not the only one!

I'm being tested for this tomorrow and it is the most horrid thing I have ever experienced! I nearly put on fake nails the other day because no matter how hard I scratch even though I am ripping the skin off it just isn't hard enough!

Can I just ask why people with this have been induced? I thought it just caused an itch? Sorry, I really don't know anything about it.

I was induced because along with itchy my BP was up, and other things were not right.

Baby was squishing my liver and once DS was born I was back to normal. Iirc the only way to stop OC is to have the baby.

thought this might help and give clear information OC
