Asda are good for vests - a pack of three plain white ones is £2 which is great because the newborn ones tend to end up covered in poop stains. I alright my cotbed sheets from there, they have multipacks of sheets on 2for £12 for you get four sheets for that price (two in each pack).

Primark for socks - five pairs for £2, some of their clothes are okay but I find they wash funny.

Matalan - good for sleepsuits and blankets. I like their sleepsuits as they all have foldover mitts but aren't as expensive as Mothercare.

Next - I know I'll get slated but I actually like Next's baby range. Their sizes are really generous so you get a fair bit of wear out of them and they wash really nicely too.

I bought some bedding from mother care then took it back because I found John Lewis quality was just so so so much better and worth every extra penny I spent on it. Also available online. The cellular blankets especially are really soft and kind to baby skin and wash really well.

It's true that you get what you pay for, my mum bought me some john lewis cellular blankets and they are lovely i wish she'd told me she'd bought them before i bought some from mamas and papas though
