Just to clear my head of lots of rubbish, then I can fill it with more.
About 3 weeks ago I was admitted to hospital with acute acute pyelonephritis caused by a UTI.
I was sent by GP to medical assessment unit and all was good, regular obs antibiotic and fluids set up that evening. Then about half an hour after antibiotic was set up I was sent to Gynae ward, but they didn't want me as I was 22 weeks and they don't take over 20. So ended up in maternity, was put on a bed next to a newborn baby which didn't bother me as I expected that on maternity anyway. Was left whilst they went to get a drip stand to hook me up to fluid and antibiotic again, I waited for 45 minutes then someone came in to check on lady across and commented that I should be led in bed not sitting on it, I explained I was waiting for someone to hook me up and they had been gone almost an hour and then I got what is probably my ill brain over reacting but I felt it was a sarcastic reply of "not likely you haven't even been here that long but good try", bit annoyed but life goes on, she came back and set me up. In less that 20 minutes I had to buzz as I was vomitting a shivvering and I felt dreadful. Someone came and said oh I can't help I will get someone else but they aren't available at the moment they are in a meeting. Was over an hour possibly nearer to 2 when someone came, they took my obs my pulse was 133 and my temp was 39.5 BP was low but not very low. Waited for doctor to come so I could be prescribed paracetamol IV and anti sickness medication.

All went ok through the night didn't get great deal of sleep, but didn't expect to really. Next day new staff new day. Consultant came round and explained I was on 2 antibiotics as they needed to fight the infection but without the urine results they couldn't be 100% certain which antibiotic to use. When he checked my notes I was only being the 1 antibiotic because they had non of the other on the the ward, so he showed them how to make it up with what they had.

I had 3 spikes as they called them in my temp during that morning (which I gathered was my temp dropping to normal then increasing again). Then the same again that night, all controlled through paracetamol and dealt with quickly.

The next day I had a bad episode and don't remember a great deal about it, just that I was placed under the critical care team where a nurse visited me twice in an hour and on the 2nd visit requested an anaethatist and Consultant be present to go through options, didn't really understand any of it, but know by the looks and hand holding from the midwife it wasn't good. They put me on half hourly obs of which I had one, then the next was 4 and half hours later which was by the critical care team when they came to check how I was getting on, they weren't too pleased, and told the midwife that if they were unable to manage me here then they had to say so I could be moved and dealt with elsewhere. That night I was placed in a private room across from the nurses station and checked on regularly and obs done regularly.
I was taken off IV antibiotic next day and placed on oral and was discharged but it was explained that my pulse was still 127 and my temp was a little higher than they would have liked but the doctor said I was intellegent enough to contact them if I worsened so I was discharged.
I was ok, took all meds as prescribed. Finished my antibiotic but within a few days I was still feeling the urge to wee urgently and it was smelly. I had another sample checked on the 2nd and that came back today as having some bacteria bout it could not confirm if it was a UTI or not, so have to take another sample tomorrow. I am so scared this is all going to happen again, as if it is the same infection it has been going on for so long, and I have to wait till next week before they can confirm if it is or is not another infection.

Moan over sorry.

I have been out for a while now, and am feeling much better than I was, just can't shift this smelly and constant weeing thing, and keeping everything crossed hoping that if it is the UTI then it doesn't attack my kidney again, as I don't think I have the energy or mental strength to go through it all again.

Goodness, just wanted to wish you well. I had pyelonephritis a few years back - started as cystitis but took so long for the silly GP surgery to get my blood results back and prescribe me the necessary drugs it turned into the kidney infection in the meantime. Spent a week in hospital as whatever the first drug they drip feed you it turned out I was immune to!

I'm sorry that the hospital messed you around so much but wish you a speedy recovery and a healthy rest of your pregnancy :)
