GTT

Basically I should have had one of these done really early on as my BMI is over 30 but as its only just over, midwife said she wasnt too worried and would only send me for one if any problems presented themselves.

At tuesdays appt I measured 3 weeks over (measured 1 week over the whole time as i have a bit of bellyfat - lol) so she organised a large for dates scan and GTT.

Had the scan yesterday and he came back as perfec size right on the aveage line of the graph. I'm really panicking about the GTT as I know I will feel horrificly dreadful (sick and worried about passing out) having nothing to eat from when i get up to about 11/12 oclock after tests are done.

Having shared my worries with a friend who has just had a baby, she said I should tell the midwife I dont want it, I have had no symptoms (apart from bad measuring) to suggest diabetes, no history in my family and I've only got 5.5 weeks left til due.

Wahts everyones thoughts? Should I stop being such a wuss or get myself out of something that is gonna stress me out beyond belief?

I have no family history of diabetes and my only risk factor was BMI of just over 30 at booking and a previously large baby over 4.5KG (I didn't have GD then). Had the GTT at 24 weeks, expecting it to be fine and came back that I do have GD and have been on insulin to control it since 26 weeks.

I would have the test. Without wanting to worry you, GD is one of the biggest reasons for late term still birth as the placenta can fail to function after 36 weeks, moreso after 38 weeks. If you are diagnosed they will keep an extra close eye on you and scan to check the placenta etc. and it doesn't necessarily mean you need lots of intervention in labour or induction or anything.

I found the GTT fine. I didn't feel sick at all at any point, although I don't deny I was a bit hungry by the time they took the second bloods!

I am very glad I was diagnosed as it seems my previously above average sized baby hasn't grown in the last two weeks and this is something that needs monitoring. In my case I was already high risk anyway, but in someone with a 'normal' pregnancy it might not have been picked up.

Have the test, stop being such a wuss, it is one morning without food, it's easy. Get up, go to hospital, have blood taken, take a drink, 2 hours later have blood taken again. It's not exactly hard, I have had 3 of the bloody things, if you can't go 2 hours without passing out, then you have problems.

I can't see how it is going to stress you out tbh, it's a simple medical procedure. Even with 5 weeks to go, it would be useful to know if you are diabetic or not, they will know to take notice of your babies blood sugars for a start.

Thanks for the advice. I'll stop being an idiot and get on with it!
