Unbelievably this is my second (surely I should know more) and I have a mixture of both but cant remember what I did before.

I'm going in for ELCS at end of Feb and thinking I should get something cosy for transfer to birth centre afterwards/going home and beyond. Just dont know what size to get. Consultant has said 'its not a whopper' and DD was 7.5lbs so expecting maybe similar/bit bigger this time (?)

Also, if anyone can recommend a good coat/snowsuit for baby, that would help too.

I would personally get newborn. Most 0-3 months clothes come up pretty big.

Yes, do get a selection of newborn clothes, but not loads. Most average-sized babies would be fine in them for upto a month or even more.

I had this M&S one and it was lovely and snug (also end of Feb baby).

I would get newborn. DD was 7lb 11oz and fitted newborn for a good few weeks.

(DS on the other hand was 6lb 1oz and drowned by the newborn clothes I got for him. Luckily friends and family got a few early baby clothes for the swamped baby Grin)

New born.

I, laughingly thought that 0-3 meant newborn-3 months. Granny had to nip to Mothercare to get smaller clothes. He was in them for 2 months. H&M have got the right idea, they have "newborn" and "2-4 months" sizes.

I got my 8lb baby comfortably into "up to 7lbs" newborn stuff for the first month or so last time - doesn't hurt to have a few bits in that size before you graduate upwards.

DD was a smidgen over 10lb at birth and was still in newborn size for a month

We're doing Newborn, but basic, cheaper stuff as both DP and I were in Newborn sizes for less than 2 weeks. Tall family!

Definitely get some Newborn stuff for just after birth, but don't go crazy with lovely, expensive items.

DS was 7lb 2oz, and newborn fitted him best for a month or so. 0-3 wasn't so big he couldn't wear it when he had to though!

My DS was nearly 12lbs at birth, and still fit in newborn clothes for a couple of weeks!

Though the MW did suggest he go straight into school uniform he was so big :o

I would recommend getting clothes from lots of different shops as sizes vary so much, that way there is always something that fits!

I've got some newborn, and some 0-3 just in case. If my third is like my first, we'll be needing 0-3. If she's like my second, then we'll need newborn.

My ds was 7lb11 at birth and is 6 weeks today.still mostly in newborn clthes though he is tall and has big feet so some of the smaller ones have beenretired.
Interestingly i have found mamas and papas 0-3 only a tiny bit bigger than newborn in length so he has been wearing these over last couple of days. All other 0-3 are still big, and the m and s 0-3 looks like i could fit in it lol!
So annoying that the sizes vary so much.

Get a few newborn and up to 1 month by the time he/ she is too big for them the 0-3 should be even if a wee bit big at first

I got some from Sainsbury's yesterday and their newborn ones go up to 9.9lbs (v specific!!). Had assumed that would be fine until reading HAHNJ's comment - Shock

Now I'm just terrified.

But really, whoppers apart, I'm hoping newborn will be fine for a while and will just be getting basic stuff in a selection of newborn and 0-3 Smile

My first was just under 10lbs and newborn fitted well for quite a few weeks.

Oh dear! I'm only 6 weeks gone but I thought that 0-3 months meant newborn (0?) until 3 months and newborn meant just 0.... shows how much I've got to learn :S

DS was 6lb15 born and was in early baby clothes for 2 months then newborn for another 2 month.

There again at 14 months he is only just fitting into 9-12!

This is an interesting thread. I had assumed that newborn would be the same as 0-3 months, how wrong I am! Looks like we'll be getting some tinier bits too then. Luckily we've been given all our clothes so far, but most of them are 0-3 months.

Have a few of both just in case, my son was 9 lb 15 - so yes, big, but not record-breaking - and chunky and actually didn't fit into newborn stuff, cue a frantic trip to the shops for dp next morning! OTOH dd was 7.5 lbs and was in newborn stuff for weeks.

I am so glad its not just me confused then!

Both me and DH where big babies and we have only got a few 0-3 and mostly 3-6 months to be sure! Opps! I think I might need to do some more shopping Smile

With DD1 the midwife told me she would be a "small but healthy baby" after messuring my bump.

A week later she was born almost 9lb, weight wise it was fine but she had freakishly long legs! Newborn baby grows were awful for her, she couldn't stretch her legs out at all and her feet were cramped.

As soon as we got home from the hospital she went straight into 0-3 months which were much better. Again this problem was down to her length not weight.

Agree with BikeRunSki H&M do a lovely size, 2-4 months. The perfect compromise!

I always get a few newborn, then see what its like when its born. Only had one (so far lol) over 9lb but 0-3 month stuff usually buries them, especially as some places have weights on them, but usually go a bit beyond that :)

DD was 6lb 14oz but dropped to 6lb after birth. She started off in small baby clothes and then was in newborn till about 7 weeks maybe longer, she was about 11lb 7oz when we moved onto next size. My niece is nearly 4 months but only weighs 11lb 11oz and is still in lots of her newborn clothes.
