Gravadlax?

I'm recently pregnant but have made a gravadlax - can I eat it? I've made a concession with no raw egg in the sauce but the salmon is ok? Made from a side of frozen salmon (which I believe frazzles any bugs) and soaked in sugar/salt brine for about 4 days.

I've made this countless times and never been poisoned. But is it a case of you maybe not knowing you've been poisoned and it still being harmful?

The Food Standards site doesn't say anything about this. I had my last child in Asia where I never received guidance and, erm, ate absolutely everything.

I'll not eat it if it's bad, but with all seeming avenues of pleasure being cut off, I'd like to (MIL's cooking, well, it's dicey)

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I was told by my mw that even sushi is fine so long as you know it's from a reptable source. If you know the salmon is of good quality and the gravalax has been prepared and stored appropriately then I really do not see a problem.

However, I know that lots of people wouldn't risk it.

Maybe get your OH to eat some and see if he is ill within 24 hours ;)

Smoked salmon is ok due to the smoking process killing the worms but for pg women it is recommended that the ss also has a period of being frozen then eaten promptly after defrosting. I'll be indulging in pre packed gravadlax over xmas.

However I do wonder whether women in other cultures get the same advice as us...I mean, I have Swedish friends who looked horrified when I questioned their consumption of salmon, and do we really believe that Asian women lay off the raw salmon sushi?!

As long as you are sure of the source and quality, and eat it very promptly after prep I dont see a problem...however I have been roundly shouted down on other threads for being 'reckless'!Not reckless, just done some research!

Sushi is OK as the fish (if sushi is in a restaurant or supermarket) must be frozen prior to preparing it, so I would assume the gravadlax would be OK if the salmon had been frozen.

I am being careful about what I eat and following guidelines, but if sushi and smoked salmon are both OK, I'd eat gravadlax.
