Pregnancy

anyone else having heart palpitations?

Am 16 weeks pregnant and for the last 2 weeks have been having heart palpitations - every now and then I get 2 massive heart beats which really take my breath away. Then back to normal. This repeats over a varying time period from 5 mins to half an hour. Happens when I am sitting up or lying down, haven't noticed it when standing or walking.

Is this normal?

I have always had poor circulation (chillblains, icy feet and hands in mid-summer) but normal blood pressure.

Can be normal. I get it in this pg but haven't before. Mention it to MW in case it's a problem but it does seem to be fairly common

Definitely mention to your MW and/or GP.

Yeah, I'm 28 weeks and been having a bit of a mare with them; like you say, when sitting down or lying. I'm pretty sure they're worse when it's hot or I'm dehydrated, too.
Nothing like a round of palpitations to make you feel like a Victorian maiden swooning on the chaise-longue....

I went to the GP who sent me for blood tests and an ECG, (apparently they can be caused by anaemia or thyroid problems) but they haven't found a cause. Probably worth getting it checked out though, you'd want to know if you were anaemic etc

I have it in everyday life, not just when pregnant, and it feels like my heart has stopped, and it makes me cough or thump my chest to feel normal again! Have never mentioned it to anyone, am just used to it I suppose, but I am now 19+2 and getting it a bit more often than usual, but not worryingly so, would be interested to see how you get on.....now to find myself a chaise longue!!

I've had a few this pregnancy, along with an unusually fast pulse. Saw GP who did blood tests but doesn't appear to be anything wrong and said not to worry provided I'm feeling generally ok

i got them a few years ago randomly every now and then during excercise but get them quite a lot during pregnancy (this is my 3rd) especially when hoovering or gardening or something energetic. i've got slightly low blood pressure and am very tall so don't think that helps.

I have had it a couple of times, once with dizziness too. I also have blood pressure that is on the low end of normal.

I suffered with heart palpitations from early on in pregnancy and it did eventually stop sometime in the early twenties weeks (now 31 weeks) I found them incredibly frustrating, I would sometimes just lay there with the doppler listening to my own wonky heartbeat!! from what information I could find on the internet I think it has something to do with the increase of blood in our bodies. Even though sometimes I thought I was having a heartattack nothing serious ever came from them.

But for peace of mind it's probably worth talking to the MW.

I have them during pregnancy. I had them with my first from about 20 weeks, but don't remember having many with my second. I am now 8+2 with my third and having them already! I am breathless alot too which is odd as I was fit enough to run a marathon just before I got pg so if feels really odd to me. I just think of it as apart of pregnancy and am not overly worried. If they get worse or more frequent I might see the doc.

I would definitely get it checked out asap. I had a heart murmur when i was very little and the fact it was on my records meant everyone i saw made such a fuss. I had to go for an echo and an ECG and thankfully everything was fine apart from soft flow murmur very common in pregnancy. However, you should get it checked all the same, especially if it is making you catch your breath. I'm sure it's fine but you wouldn't want there to be problems during labour so best to put your mind at rest.
Good luck
