2nd Trimester... headaches?

Morning,

I've just started the 2nd Trimester, 15+3 today. I've had a fairly easy pregnancy so far but for the last 3 days I've had a nagging headache which I just can't shake. It's not agony, more like a dehydration headache (it's not that, I've drunk lots of water). I have had headaches on and off since I fell pregnant but more water and a paracetamol usually sorted it. Not this time though.

The dreaded google says it's exhaustion and I need rest, headache kept me up all night so have taken today off, which I hate, on DH's insistence.

Any advice gratefully received, really want to get back to my usual self.

Hi there

I had the most horrendous migraine style headaches that started about week 14 and continued. I eventually went to see a physiotherapist in London that was recommended to me as specialising in prenatal treatments and had a very holistic approach to pregnancy and birth and has her own children so knows what pregnancy does to the mind and body first hand. It was amazing and helped SO much! It really helped relieve the pressure by working on my neck which in turn helped with the pressure in my head. I finally managed to get some proper sleep and relax a bit. If this doesn't work for you you could also try reflexology (didnt' work for me personally) or accupuncture (I don't like the needles!).

Hope you get some relief soon.x

15 weeks was for me headache zone. No idea why - I remember crying with the pain while pg with DC1.

It didn't last long so just put it down to hormones etc at the time.

Not sure if this is common, but it just struck me that you're at exactly the same stage.

Good idea to rest - if it starts to worry you, get to GP.

Thanks for that,

Really hope it goes after 15 weeks, although having said that I don't fancy even another 4 days of this. Maybe I'll feel better after a nap.

Do go to the docs if you've still got it today. Better to be safe.

Yes I had terrible headaches at about 16-17 weeks. I just took some paracetemol. Someone also recommended having some coffee which did seem to ease them.

Happily I am now 24 weeks and they have disappeared so hopefully they won't stick around for long.

I had this with DD1 and my current pregnancy with DD2. I found that paracetamol didn't really do much but combined with either diet coke or a coffee the headaches shifted in double quick time. Thankfully they stopped when I reached the last trimester. The midwife thought I was a bit mad when I told her my solution but said if it works go with it.

I don't normally suffer with headaches but have throughout pregnancy, I'm now 31 weeks. What helped me was slowing down, and taking time to rest. It's very annoying as there is lots to do and work is demanding etc. I don't really feel more tired than normal so in a way I wonder if it was my body's way of slowing me down, the headaches have been bad enough to bring me to a bit of a standstill from time to time.

Like others coffee and paracetamol works, sometimes a little coffee heads one off in the mornings. But I don't like to have too much of either. Mine have got better in the 3rd tri but if I do 'too much' they are back!

Yes, I am 16+5 and headaches here too- mentioned to my midwife and she just said 'normal, especially in 2nd trimester' and 'drink lots of water and take paracetamol if you need them'. Trying to avoid the latter unless really bad. Still can't stand tea or coffee so don't think caffeine can be a solution for me

Feel much better today, having slept all of yesterday! But will definately try the diet coke thing if it happens again. Thanks ladies

If you get a bit dehydrated, plain water will just go straight through you. You'd be better off trying a decent rehydration drink like Gatorade which contains electrolytes as well.

There are plenty of headache pills that contain paracetamol and caffeine available these days. If you're not having any other caffeine, it shouldn't be an issue. Check the dose and remember that the safe pregnancy limit is 200mg - most of the pills are well below this.

I've been getting lots of headaches lately (am 23 weeks), but have realised it's probably partly because I'm spending far too long online each evening reading stuff about aches and pains in pregnancy!

I had hormonal migraines whilst pregnant with DD2. Apparently it's really common but unfortunately not much they can do while you are pregnant.

I can only sympathise and recommend cool cloth and early bed.

Yep, me too about a similar stage in preg. The only thing to do (if you are able) is to go to bed in a really dark room and have a sleep.

Hard to do with a toddler to care for but hey ho.

Hope yours disappear soon.
